I am getting so sick of hearing all sorts of excuses for and dismissals of the acheivements of the bodybuilders of the 60's. Is everyone so dependant on gear that they can't comprhened that muscle is built from hard work and massive amounts of protein?!? All this, Low Volume training is bullshit! Hell, a farmer goes to failure dozens of times a day but we as bodybuilders are so afraid of doing an extra set out of fear of overtraining.

As Jack LaLAnne says; "The body was meant to work and sleep. That's what makes it efficient. You don't make a championshipracehorse by feeding it well. You work it!!!"

Another excuse is that the drugs back then were stronger. Nonsense. It's all a denial that the old timers had a better work ethic, more disipline and more guts. Besides, the chemical structure of dianabol is the same and a milligram is a milligram. Maybe bootleg stuff is underdosed, but shit, even if it's half the strength of the old dianabol, I haven't seen too many people on this board who look like Draper or Scott or Howorth or Sipes or Poole and it seems most guys are doing ten times as much gear.

Lift big. Eat big. Get big. The gear just puts the icing on the cake.

You have us told before that you think most people undertrain...but how many sets and how many times a week do you think someone should workout if dieet etc...are all in check?

um, i dont see how this helps your argument, since a low volume training BBer with so called "bullshit" training is certain to be bigger and better built than the farmer who goes to failure every day

if it was a matter of sheer work, nelson, every labourer would be huge and ripped.

optimising any process (in our case, growth of muscle and burning of fat) is a tad more complex than you make it out to be

This is part of the reason why I rarely post anymore. I'm tired of seeing fat bastards or skinny guys doing 3 plus grams a week. Those are the same guys who as Nelson said, can't believe that Larry Scott only took one or two d-bol a day. Why? Because he looked better than they do?! And genetics my ass. If you look at most of those guys from the old days they were sticks before bbing!

"Vince Gironda was an idiot" "Arnold didn't know how to train" "Serge Nubret didn't lift heavy, he was a fool!" "None of them were big like today because they didn't 'bulk' in the offseason" and on and on it goes. Well shit the bed, the guys who spew that crap are the same ones who hang off net guru's nuts and look like shit! Why is it so hard to admit that someone like Vince knew what he was talking about (someone who had helped anyone who listened to him make incredible progress) and try his methods, but it is so easy so follow some crap a 'net guru' comes up with?!

Go over to the anabolic board and you'll see 'fallen bro' posts, enlarged heart problems, gyno this and that, acne problems, kidney troubles and a whole bunch of other crap. Then you see the person's pic, and you have to think to yourself "was it worth it?" Because half the time they don't even look like they lift, let alone juice! Yeah but that Arnold, he sure didn't know how to train.....

but i still dont believe the pros in teh 60's really used 400mg primo and 10mg dbol per day.

Pearl & Grimek admitted steroids usage was about common from the late 50's.
We can speculate about the products quality, but QUANTITY is NOT the answer, as it isn't with some 100 euro a box antibiotic to cure flu or insulin.
Yesterday the former IFBB champ at my gym told me ( i was dissatisfied with my biceps' growing pace ): look ( i use the EZ biceps curl machine with 90kg ), you could use the dumbbells if you wanted, but that's just fine & that's the only exercise i use. and he has at least 4 people he trains placing top at IFBB/NABBA nationwide contests.

Believe it.

Hey, there are guys who never touch the stuff and look great. Obviously, Draper and Scott and Pearl et al were all genetically blessed. But that's the point. Without genetics, all the drugs in the world won't make you look like them. And if you have extrodinary genetics, it doesn't take that much gear-- just a lot of hard work. And I am adamently confident that they worked harder than most guys today.

nelson... I do agree. Too many guys think their pharmaceutical regimen is the only thing that they should concentrate on. Most people don't seem to make the mind body connection that stimulates growth and moves you through plateaus. I have seen guys on i gram of AAS a week and make no gains. When I see how they train... I realize why. Also, I am sure their diet is deficient as well. Bodybuilding is a lifestyle. It isn't about shooting a bunch of juice and then going out and partying and eating burritios.

I do agree that too many guys think they can get by with this low volume training and to some degree I think it works in more advanced bodybuilders who have built the base with higher volume training. It is proven that what worked really well for you in your first 5 years of training may lead to stagnation beyond those early years... a complete reversal of philosophies is sometimes needed to stimulate new growth.

When I look at the bodybuilders from the 60's and 70's you are truly looking at the pinnacle of the sport. Sure they are not as big as todays pros... but aesthetically they are far more pleasing to look at.
