Pushups: Beneficial or not?

Hey folks I can only go to the gym 3 times a week, so I was wondering if doing about 6-9 sets of 30-40 pushups a day will give me anything significant. I'll probably do something like 3 in the evening 3 at night, or all 6 in one sitting...obviously, I don't expect a huge chest and bulging triceps after doing 2 weeks of pushups, but if this will help suplement the growth of my body in even a minor way I guess I'll keep doing it.

Or is this completely useless?

I will also make sure not to do them one the day of or one day after my chest/tri workouts...

any suggestions/comments?

pushups always worked good if your travelling or what not but i heard from some guy it starts to seperate your chest, which is what you dont want is that true..

If you're going for size, I'd eliminate the push-ups. The rep range is too high. I only do calisthenics (bodyweight exercises) when I'm travelling and can't get to a gym...just to help maintain. If u can only get to the gym 3x a week, try something like this.
Workout #1 chest n back
Workout #2 legs
Workout #3 shoulders, bi's, n tri's

If you have never lifted or done any sort of resistance training before, then pushups can surely stimulate something in your chest and triceps. For the most part though, they're useless. I've heard before that they can be rejuvenative to the rotator cuffs (no idea if this is true), and I know that if you're planning on joining the Corp. or any such thing, then you'd better get used to them. Other than endurance, they're probably worthless, though.

Pushups will not seperate your chest. I'm not even going to get into that, but trust me, that's so far from true.

If you can get into the gym three times a week, then why not check out the 5x5 routine posted here: http://www.elitefitness.com/forum/showthread.php?t=375215

It has you working Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Provided those are the three days you can get in, and you're willing to break your balls while doing it, you'll see some great gains.

Thanks for the replies guys

the thing is, I've been working out for about 1.5 years and I already have a 3-day split down... I do Chest/Tris, Shoulders/Bis, and Legs/Back. I was just wondering if doing pushups during off-days or for example during legs/back day would give me any noticable gains.

Guess not..

once again tyvm

I used to train like this, but I have been convinced to give the 5x5 in this thread a try. And in all honesty, the 5x5 has some serious backing to it. I can't wait to see what happens.
