Purchasing a motorcycle

Anyone with any experience etc would be helpful. I have to drive around 50+ miles a day for work and I drive a full size pick up. I'm spending $90.00 a week in gas and thinking of buying a bike. Problem is I need something economical in total cost. I don't want a scooter but I can't spend a ton of money on a nice Harley. I also don't want to buy a crotch rocket. If someone can give me advice on a website that either sells used bikes or has any ideas on smaller cruiser type bikes they would recommend I would appreciate it.

It's really just to get to work and home.

This time last year I bought a Triumph Bonneville. Very reliable bike with good power, but not too much for a newb rider. There is a small, cheap Harley aimed at the new rider which you might consider, but if you want something different, you definitely want to try something else.

Just know that if you're looking for a ride to use as a daily commuter, your chances of getting hurt eventually are pretty good. Traffic and motorcycles do not mix.

Yamaha v-star 650 cruiser is nice, i have one. Reliable, shaft drive, cheap economical

That's a death sentence broski

buy a fuckin' yaris :)

or an chevy aveo

if it's purely economical, that makes the most sense

I love bikes, but they are for play, not commuting

I know they are dangerous and you have to not worry about how you drive but how the people around you drive. I grew up in daytona beach and have been around bikes my whole life but never purchased one before. Always wanted one too just right now I know I can't afford what I really want. Something like a Harley Fat Boy. I could die just walking out of my front door so I'm not gonna live scared.

It's a great excuse to get one now with gas prices the way they are. I've always wanted my own bike and I simply can't afford a prius or aveo. A customer of mine's son bought a bike for around 3k from Kawasaki and his payments are 48$ a month. if I could fill up my truck once a month $90. Instead of $90x4. I'm actually saving money. So although I appreciate the good lookin out for a fellow bro I'm really just looking for avenues an bike ideas.

what do y'all think of a Kawasaki eliminator?

We learned on those at the MSF course. They are pure beaters but probably reliable if they were given to us to take for the course.
Very small at 250cc if i recall.

lol...because Im weird like this and had to look it up...I guess baseball and motorcycle accidents are the predominant ways one would rupture a testicle (50 psi to pop one)

If MPG is your true concern, then how about a Diesel car? Get a 5 or 8 -year-old Jetta or a Passat for the same price as a bike, and get 50 or 60 mpg, and have a vehicle that you can still go to work during storms, and all... If you do go with a bike, I'd think about a dual sport bike, since you want good MPG and an upright position (not a rocket). The Suzuki DR, Kawasaki KLR, or one like that. Only thing I don't like is that once you've ridden a crotch rocket, you're spoiled by the handling and power. You can still maneuver decently on a dualsport, but you aren't going to whip through the turns as well as you could on a rocket. But for a city commuter bike, it might be perfect.

As far as safety, I have at one time for about a year, used a bike for commuting. I had plenty of close calls, and I wouldn't even think of it now in my mid 40s and married. Fun riding in good conditions only, for me. I don't think a Yaris is any safer than a bike, IMHO... In fact I think I'd rather take my chances avoiding a crash on a bike, than to hope somebody is around with a can opener after not being able to avoid a crash in the Yaris. (no offense Yaris owners; I like Toyotas too... Just BIGGER ones ;) ).

Riding since 1979...

1) For your situation, DONT BUY NEW

2) Geo Metro, Yaris, Fiesta, Honda, etc.....35-40 mpg app. with all of these

3) SV650, V-STAR, Victory Vegas/Kingpin, plenty others.....35-50mpg app.

YOu will probably want a bike with some storage capabilities so keep that in mind. You can find any of these of craigslist and most of the time strike a fairly good deal. Dont use a dealer complete waste of money that you dont need to waste.

4) Plan on crashing at some point. Dont think for a second you will be safe. With that said I love to ride and will never stop out of fear.

Commuter traffic + motorcycle = bad scene. One other thing you want to factor in, get something AFLAC or some other type of disability insurance.

And for the sake of all that is sacred, wear a helmet! One Gary Busey is enough in the world.

I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box but I know well enough to wear a helmet, even with my luscious locks of hair. I'm not planning on riding everyday but enough to drop my expenses with gas. Like I said before I have always wanted my own bike and this is just the excuse I have needed. Thanks for all the tips so far and thanks for the concern as well.

driving a motorcycle in traffic during a morning commute just sounds like a bad idea. people have their heads up their asses when they drive during the day nevermind at 8 in the morning when the old thing keeping them awake is coffee and their doing makeup/getting dressed in the rear view.

i ran that operation a few times for similar reasons. well my license was suspended and i figured there was a better chance of them not catching me on a bike..but after the 4th or 5th time my life flased before my eyes i gave up the motorcycle monday-friday between 7 and 10am

One of these days I hope to get a motorcycle, I want to get my license first though.
