Puplic schools in Florida suck...

I grew up in Texas and took public schools for granted.....If you value your child's education....get ready to spend $6000.00 to $10,000.00 a year for private schools.......vouchers are now down the shitter!! The closest public school to me with above a C rating in 40 miles away......Jeb made improvements......but we need a hell of alot more.. :worried:

Welcome to the sunshine state & home of future under educated morons..

one of the pitfalls of not having a state income tax.

dullboy says it's not the worst idea to build your entire state economy on snatching northern retirees (with some tourism mixed in), but it does leave the younger people who move there trying to snag some of the money of those old folk with little governmental services.

It's a damn shame to know that kids in Mississippi & Louisiana are getting a better education.......

Yea with a kid on the way, I was starting to think about whether we'll be able to afford private school when the time comes. When I went from private to public in 3rd grade, they had to give me 5th grade books because I already knew everything they were teaching. That was over 15 years ago so I can only imagine how much more advanced the private school kids are nowadays

I swear if I were to have children of my own now, I would probably home school them. The schools here are pathetic, from what I have seen so far. (My fella makes decisions for his kids, and they have been going to public schools here so far. I don't really have the say so to change that this late in the game, but I don't think they have gotten a good education).

the public schools in ghettos are shits. Whathca expect - look at their parents.

move to a better neighborhood - it's how the middle class separates itself fromt he lower class shits. house values.

I live in a nice neighborhood, and I think that our schools here are terrible. Generally, though, I'm pretty tough to impress in that regard. I think all public schools k-12 are going to hell in a handbasket these days. Are you saying poor kids don't deserve a good education?

talk about generalized statements. That doesn't ensure good public schools
certain big cities can vary alot... New york, Miami, parts New jersey...the areas can vary greatly just 1 town away. And guess what they share?

How many kids from manhattan actually go to public school?

or any major part of miami?

That being said...florida has the absolute worst schools bar none. It amazes me how many dumb and ignorant people there are everywhere. Schools definetely have alot to do with how fucked up people are down here. The further south you go, the worse it is in florida.

Home schooling has a massive downside. My children were HS'ed (one of them still is). Missing the socialization component has a massive impact on the children. I was one of those people who were bought into "oh, they get socialization from other places like sports, church and play-days" -- my personal experience is that isn't NEARLY enough.

From 1-5th grade it's bad... but not terrible
From 6-8th grade it's bad... very bad
From 9-12th grade it's crippling. Unless your kid wants to be a youth minister or a christian camp councilor they may be screwed.

Public Schools here in Central Fla vary from Awesome to Awful even within
the same school district. But then again, private schools have this same issue.

This variation has little to due IMO with Fla's Poor financial support of public schools, as most get the same amount across the state or across the counties.
But it has more to do with interest or lack therof in the School from the staff, community and mostly the parents of the students.

Our Daugher attended private school until 8th grade due to the school we were zoned in was a crap rated school. We moved into a better school zone with an A rated middle school and moved her over and all has been great.
Same with the new High School we are zoned for, also a good rated school within the county.

Just seems a shame..that all the tax money that we spend here in Florida and we still have to shell out the money to send our kids to private school..I am feeling some resentment.

Above and beyond the strictly books side of the issue,

It worked out well for us to have a good base foundation of small private school
from K-8th grade. But there were issues with attending a small private school such
as limited sports and extra curricular activies and clubs, lack of exposure to important social issues, lack of needing to deal with real world issues etc.

Generally, many kids that are either Home School'd or spend all 12 years in small institutions have a shock when they attend college or go out on their own and haven't had to deal with social issues that they would be exposed to in a large public school environment.

agreed.

Between government administration (which screws everything up) and teachers-for-life thanks to the NEA (the teachers union), public schools never had a chance anyway. The ones that aren't screwed-up messes usually have affluent children, additional funding from affulent neighborhoods, and external sponsors.

Vouchers would create a smooth transition where we could eventually privatize these screwed-up schools.

I'd love to see a crop of non-union schools, some religious some not, pop-up where parents had alternatives to public schooling.

Believe me.. Most of your average private schools also have some of the same BS issues as public schools.

Just on a smaller scale and a bit more controllable/hidden.

What really kills me are the large numbers of kids getting 0 support from their parents in any way regarding them doing well in school.

basically, the higher the house prices - the better the school. It's not a dumb generalization - it's fact. Look it up.

People buy houses specifically depending on how good the school is. For ex: house prices in the ghetto of long beach are cheap, and their schools are dogshit.

If parents can't move, and don't like the school - they send them to private school. Anothr option, and considering the state of ps's in america, a wise choice.
