Punching Bags > Heavy Bag

I want to get a punching bag and I looked into prices and all but I'm not sure the difference of them all... There is Vinyl Heavy Training Bag, Classic Canvas Heavy Training Bag, Super Leather Training Bag, Genuine Leather Heavy Bag. They all go from like 40lb. to 70lb. to 100lb. I want to start hitting the bag and I don't know what make to get and what weight to get. I weigh like 180 and I don't know what weight of a bag would be good, like so it doesn't swing all around, just need it there steady to punch. Does anyone have any opinions on heavy bags?

Where are you going to be setting the bag up? When I lived with my parents I had a heavy and speed bag in the basement (heavy bag was suspended from Joists by an eye bolt) When I really got into a groove the whole first floor of my parents house would shake. My wife and I are building our first home now and I'm thinking of having the builder set a heavy bag stand into the basement concrete floor when they pour it. That way my wife won't complain about the noise.

a 70 lb bag is gonna swing like crazy after two or three punches .
i would go with the heaviest one u can get . also the advantage of a heavier bag is more resistance , making ur punches harder. i have had a 70 lb vinal and a 90 lb leather ... I also have been boxing for about 7 years. the texture of the bag is not as important as long as u have gloves on .... i personally would get a leather one because they seem to be made better.. also dont forget , and i can not stress this enough ... Wrap ur hands.. or u will learn the hard way..... and get a good set of gloves...

for good boxing gear go to www.ringside.com

hope this helps/

Thanks, yeah ofcourse I would probably wear gloves if not I would defiantly wrap my hands up. I would have the heavy bag either down in my basement or maybe even out in my garage, its a two story big garage. I'm not sure right now where I would be able to hang the bag off of, I might have to buy a heavy bag stand... What you guys think about Everlast, I heard some people saying good comments somewhere on them. And to go with either a leather or canvas bag, and the heaviest bag.

Would you happen to know of any websites with info on the proper way to wrap your hands? Thanks.

I would use a stand to hang the bag on. I don't like them hanging from joists, when the bag swings it will cause the joist to move. If you know how to weld or have a friend who does you can always make your own stand.

At my dad's house I have a canvas heavy bag and a speed bag. As someone else mentioned, the house will rattle!! I have both in the basement, but you can hear/feel it on the second floor. I would go with at least 100 lbs IMO. Tend to be more stable that way. I *think* you can buy stands (mine is hanging from a beam). Also, there are gloves for the speed bag with a little padding, and some for the heavy bag with more padding. Go for the ones with the extra. I used the light gloves AND wrapped my hands, but have scars on my knuckles (the bled) nonetheless. Oh, my heavy is an everlast, and I have not a single complaint about it.

Thank you, I do plan on getting a 100lb canvas everlast heavy bag and gloves. Now, since my house is old and the basement probably wouldn't be able to hold up it, even though im not some pro boxer, it just won't be able to hold up.... and in my garage, its a two story garage, it might have support beams to hang from... but i'm most likely going to have to get a stand.
I found some stands and wanted some opinions on which. thanks so far for the opinions.

Actually, I found the cheapest stand here.

Sounds good. Let me know how the stand works for you, I will need one myself at some point (mostly concerned about noise).

Hrm.. Would you happen to know somewhere that has plans for making stands? Thanks.

I don't have any plans, but the one we built looks a lot like the one that you were looking at for $119. Only ours was less finished looking, but it did the job. We attached it to the garage floor with four bolts and that thing never moved.

Does anyone have any experience with the bag stands that aren't bolted to the floor? Do they move around on you? I didn't see that the stands is the link above were designed to be secured to the floor. I had an 80lb canvas bag at when I was living at home. With gloves on you won't be able to tell the diffence between canvas and leather. (at least I couldn't)

that stand does have place holders for weights, for extra standing. about bolting to the floor... thats a good idea. i wonder if in any way you can bolt that $119 stand to a floor. maybe might need like plates to go around the bottom legs and then secure the plates down to the floor..

You should be able to secure it to the floor. Just find something that you can use as clamps, secure those to the floor, and then attach the clamps to the bottom of the stand.
