Pumping Iron

arnie = charisma

it was all natural to him, he was blessed

How has it come to be that Arnold is on camera smoking weed and yet Obama, who wrote about doing it a couple times............is being taken to task over it? I give Obama credit for being honest.........when he was young he took a walk..........to me that's a very important criteria for being a contemporary world leader.......ya took a walk and saw how the real people lived. I'm sick of silver spooners in govt........they know NOTHING!!!

Man those guys looked great. I think they look way better than todays pro's.

Yea, no doubt they looked good, but I don't think they are better then todays pro's. I met Jay at the Contra a couple weeks ago. Talked with him for a little while, very nice guy.....oh and he was weighing 305 and looked pretty fucking tight. Hard to deny todays pro's don't look good too

You can't seriously be calling Arnold-the guy who grew up in war-torn Graz,
Austria with no electricity or running water-a silver spooner.

todays pros are more ripped but most are not as aesthetically pleasing.

Modern bodybuilding has changed from the artistic to the anatomic. Where as bodybuilders of the 70's-80's were large, symmetrical, and defined, the new standard seems larger, symmetrical, vascular, and striated. Sculptors of artistic male statues historically could not and did not create art pieces that depicted the level of anatomic detail that modern bodybuilders possess. Many people's sense of aesthetics are shaped by these male statues. When a man comes along displaying similar qualities as the sculpted statue, his physique is viewed as artistic and aesthetically pleasing. When a man comes along that displays the anatomical detail of a skinned cadaver, his physique is viewed as negative and unartistic... almost like a science project. In fact many will refer exclusively to modern bodybuilders as walking science projects even though bodybuilders from the 70's-80's were experimenting with and incorporating multiple drugs to achieve their 'artistic' appearance.

2006 Olympia final...

I like all of the physiques in the modern Mr. Olympia clip, but I can see why modern bodybuilding as it is promoted will not receive mainstream acceptance. Are there any eloquent spokespeople? The premiere contest in the world is run like a circus. You have one guy standing in the middle of the comparison line-up behaving as if he has Tourette Syndrome, the posing in general is abysmal, and the overly loud announcer just eggs on the spectacle. The competitors and fans in Pumping Iron seem dignified and poised, like a standard you want to aspire to. The competitors and fans in the 2006 Olympia video seem like a mob of violent soccer hooligans you want to avoid.
