Jr. High and High school should only teach math and english (fuck history, it's only good for trivia games) and they should start implimenting a college type feel, where the students takes classes that prepare them for a career. They don't need Phys ED., don't need science, don't need Home Economics, don't need geography (buy a map), unless these classes are picked by the student because of their career goals. What do you mean by 'public school'?

Public school to me means an expensive education where you're parents, unless you're on a scholarship must fork out thousands.

Community school means you're in with every other Dick, Tom and Harry.

Kids in Jr. High & High School are still very impressionable. I think they should make a lot of peripheral courses optional, but I think the Core should be English, Science, Math, Phys Ed, & Home Ec. Home Ec should also focus more on stuff like managing a home, bills, mortgages, responsibilities, etc.
True Sexual Education should also be mandatory in High School, & it should deal with relationships & gender perspectives, not just physical love.
People change careers all the time. To eliminate a core field, when people are so young, will eliminate options when they are older. Besides, who knows what they want to be, at 14, or even 17 yrs old?

along that line, I called 411 yesterday and asked for the number to Carolina Acceleration.....the girl looked for awhile, then came back on and said there was no number for that....then she asked if I spelled Acceleration...E-X-C-E-L-L....anyway, you get the point. I asked her how in the hell she got that job.....blows my mind...

You ever notice how at McDonalds, etc...if the register is not working, how they cannot figure change ??? Unbelievable that they can't even add or subtract.....not to mention speak correctly...these people would be illiterate as based on a test from 1955....

I disagree. A child should emerge from their education not only able to survive college, but also with a foundation of general information.

I don't recall Geography being taught as a separate class.

Students with no science background will not be prepared for college at all.

i know what i dont want to be...i know i will never go into a career or make any sort of life decision knowing i will have to use history or english. right now those classes are just time wasters and aheadache for me.

i wish my classtime could be spend on the maths and sciences, or maybe even art classes instead...(yes i have more use for an art class than i do a fucking english or history class- (unless its for naptime, then history is fine))

i agree a general understanding of the world and countries history is necessary, but the in depth stress put on it in highschool is REDICULOUS.

reguardless, a mathematician or doctor does not need to have an in depth understanding/memorization of history... historians do...politicians do...lawyers do (to an extent)....

I have been out of school for more than a decade, I have a degree and I am working on another. I don't use any of the stuff I learned in history in every day life. I gaduated with a 3.4 (not that great, but not that bad). As you can see. English is not one of my strong points, Math is my favorite, that may have alot to do with why I am a Designer and not an English Teacher.

Different subject matter provides different methods and patterns for the brain to expand and diversify it's thought processes, in addition to the importance to knowledge of the subject matter itself. These subjects are not simply taught because someone wants you to know how to spell cat, or memorize the date of the Gettysburg Address, or learn 2+2=4, or know that plants intake CO2.

I'm amazed at how little understanding people have of basic physical concepts, let alone math. But thats easy to say when 99% of your classes deal with those two subjects in a very complicated manner.

I was thinking it would be cool to teach high school physics.

I agree with you here. I'm not really well educated when it comes to things like Shakespeare. I know that's not entirely relevant, but I was reading an article the other day about how literate people are today. The point was that even the lower educated people at the turn of the last century still had knowledge of these stories & others, like Homer, & the Greek philosophers. The reason given was, before entertainment became such a huge industry people were forced to aquaint themselves with these stories. Then when other forms of entertainment arrived, they lost interest in having to read, & even think about what they were reading. Today's internet society is even worse because we spend so much time on these boards & surfing for instant news, that we don't have the patience to actual think about the moral of a story.

Anyway, it isn't necessarily about the practical application a knowledge of history gives you, but it makes you a better human being. If it was up to me I would make people take more history, more art, music and things that most people complain about as being "useless".
BTW, I hated history in high school. But in colllege, the professors were much better teachers, they talked more about the interesting (dirt) type stuff.
And now I read books about history, ON MY OWN, with no one making me.

In HS the number #1 complaint was always "why do I have to take math, it's not going to help me in the real world". It just goes to show teenagers don't always know whats good for them. I'm a graphic designer as well. I just read a history book called "Picasso's War". It's about Guernika and the historical context it was painted in. Very interesting.

How long have you been a Graphic Designer and how well is it working for you? I was doing Electrical Design for a fire protection company, but now I am attending school again to get a degree in Vehicle Design (what I've been wanting to do for a while). I'm hoping that Michigan's technical jobs bounce back soon, if not; time to move.
