Protien poisoning

Please discuss. I eat too much tuna sometimes, three cans a day. To meet my quota.

I don't prefer peanut butter because I think it gives me acne.

If you know any good threads about this issue, please post a link.

Wouldn't a mainly protien diet get u in trouble?

I hope you don't eat albacore. With the high levels of mercury in tuna, I would not eat 3 cans a day. The current FDA recommendation is one can a week.

Really? Damn. Would one can a day be dangerous? I am thinking along the lines of chicken of the sea or bumble bee low sodium versions (or another equivalent brand).
 
I eat 1 can a day 5 times a week... as for protein poisoning... wouldn't know about it. The key thing when on a higher protein diet (say, over 50% of caloric intake) is to keep your water intake HIGH... All that protein is harsh on your liver, so you need to keep flushing all the bad stuff out.

Aim for keeping your urine transparent throughout the day

Yes water is important and drink lots of it.....but there is absolutely no scientific evidence that proves that too much protein causes liver damage, is an old time myth.....

You may have food poisoning or you may be allergic to some protein

What are the symptoms?

I am consuming 21 times the recommended weekly intake?

I like Coverleaf as it is not as chewy or rough as other brands. It does not mention anywhere on the can that it has mercury in it. I am not surprised.

14 grams of protien in a 170g net and 120g drained can.

It is mainly spick Jack Tuna, water and salt.

Is it possible that you compare this with the albacore you were talking about?

thats very good advice, a lot of pro body builders will tell you that. DON"T FORGET WATER.

A friend of mine warned me about mercury in canned Tuna and too much of it can't possibly be good.

I am worried now, and that is why i started this thread.

I also saw on "Survivor man" a show that you aren't necessarily familiar with that, when in wilderness, if all you can hunt and eat is rabbits, then you will get protien poisoning in less than 2 weeks. Rabbit meat is pure protien, no fat.

Have to get my hands on some rabbit meat. hehe.

The term 'protein poisoning' which you may have heard on your survivor program is misleading as it is not the protein in the rabbit meat which is the problem -- it is the iron values. You will notice from the above stats that wild rabbit meat has an iron value of 18% but that it is much lower in the domestic version and lower still in chicken. If you were to eat an exclusive diet of wild rabbit meat then your iron levels would increase. High levels of iron in your body will lead to dehydration, low blood sugar levels, a build-up of fluid in the lungs, gastrointestnal problems, low blood pressure, headaches, dizziness, elevated or weak pulse. You will begin to show symptoms when your iron levels reach 20mg/kg of body weight. Past 60mg/kg of body weight is usually lethal. Your body will store excess iron so these effects will be accumlative.

As for a diet high in protein, it would only become a problem to your kidneys if your kidneys where in weakened state to begin with. Provided all your renal functions are normal it should not present a problem. A protein only diet though would create a problem as you would not be consuming all the nutritional requirements your body needs to function. Balance is the key.

Tuna or any fish: In general, the larger the fish the higher the levels of toxicity as the larger fish eat the smaller fish and the toxins build up over time. Most media coverage has been on mercury levels in tuna as mercury is associated with neurological disorders, especially in children. In moderation, fish consumption is considered as safe as it is likely going to be ... meaning it is probably only going to get worse.

Acne: This is more to do with genetics than the types of foods which you consume. It is possible to break-out in a rash due to an allergic reaction but then that is not acne. Even if you keep your skin as clean as possible, it is still possible to have acne. Just enjoy your food as best as you can and if your acne does become severe, then consult with a dermatologist. Other than that, it is just a part of growing up.
