Protein shakes equal to a meal?
This is my question.
Can I consider a protein shake just like a meal?
If so, do I have to wait at least 3 hours between a shake and a regular meal?
I usually finish my workout around 8.30 pm and once home I have a shake and then dinner in a hour and another shake before going to bed.
Now, if I had to wait 3 hours after a shake, it would mean I should have my dinner around 11.30 pm and then my last shake before bed around 2.30am !!!
I'm confused...HELP!

What's a meal?

protien, carbs, fat.....

What's in a shake?

protein, carbs, fat....

Is a shake a meal?

YES :)

Absolutely. A protein shake is definitely regarded as a meal.

The only difference between a protein shake and a regular
whole food meal is that the body processes the shake much
quicker and you can therefore have another meal sooner.

you can get meal replacement shakes = a meal, so in ur case after getting home around whatever time then u can have a meal replacement shake and thats it. but bro make sure you have a shake (normal protein shake or whatever u take) straight after a workout cos ur body needs it plus carbs, keeps nitrogen balance in a positive state!!!

I use meal replacement shakes myself for lunch if i dont have time to eat cos of work!!

cheers :D

first thing in the morning, i think a shake is much more needed than whole foods.

i take down protein shakes all the time, probably as much as the number of times satchboogie has changed his avatar :D

exactly, first thing in the morning, and right before bed, along with right after training, most important three

and right before bed

Have to disagree with you here. IMO solid food at this time is much more desireable. You want something that'll stay with you as long as possible threw out the night, and a shake, even casein, is still faster then a solid food protein source.

agree with JG1.

i like to chow down red meat and/or chicken before bedtime.

You can have whey protein shakes closer than 3 hours apart, say 1.5-2 hours. Right before bedtime I would prefer real food like a can of tuna so it'll stay with me all night.

Good call on the tuna. Iv'e also heard that adding a table spoon of flax seed oil slows down the digestion process.

this thread is making me wanna down an eas myoplex.. vanilla.

I also like a cup of cottage cheese or something before bed...

then set yer alarm for 3:00 pound a shake, and go back to bed... :)

Fat-free cottage cheese is my before-bed mainstay. I skip the shake during sleep and eat a bomber load when I first get up.

I get hungry very soon after shakes, so now I add flax or peanut butter + uncooked oats to try to slow down the absorption/digestion.

Bro's are right, real food is definitely more desirable at night. That way it'll stay with you. I don't know about you, but I'm hungry a half hour after a shake, so they really don't do shit for me besides give me my protein. Your body can acutally break down muscle while you sleep if you don't have enough calories. Not all protein shakes can be considerd a meal replacement. Look at the calorie, carb, vitamin content as well. If you're talking straight protein shakes, most likely it doesn't have many of these items that make up a real meal. Check out a MRP.

i think the best option for the night is not to rely on shakes, meals, MRPs etc but to actually wake up in the middle of the night and down a shake or whatever. that is what i hear BBs used to do a long time ago. without doing that the body would actually go around 8hrs without any protein intake- u'd never do that during the day so y do that in the night.

only thing I do not look at as a meal would be insects/bugs flying into my mouth when I'm running or doing my morningcardio. :)

I dont consider liquids to be meals. Protein shakes are what increase your protein intake between meals, after workouts, and before bed etc etc...
