Protein and gas....

A more soluble protein will also help in regards to lessening the effects of the gas. The less soluble a protein is, then the longer it will take before it gets digested by the small intestines...which will increase the time that the intestine's microbes will be able to use it as a "feeding ground". These microorganisms will give off a lot of gas as a byproduct, thus it will increase gas for the user as well. As for whey, a lot of users report that they get better results from a complete whey protein Isolate.

Other than this, you may want to decrease the amount of protein at 1 serving time and break it up into 2 smaller meals with a little break between them. Also, a gram or two of ginger root seems to really help as well. And of course, drinks lots of water to help increase the solubility as well.

I had a lot of gas too and i was using milk with my shakes. I started using lactose free milk and have no gas at all now.

You're right, high protein causing *damage* is a myth.

However, high protein does cause gas as described. While the evidence supporting this claim is mostly anecdotal (eg. ate a whole chicken for lunch today and haven't stopped farting), the majority of people who consume more protein than your average joe will experience this at some point or another.

As for your reaction to lactose free products, you're confusing the variables. Its more than likely you were getting gas because you were lactose intolerant - not from the protein.
