I ordered his book and it should be in very soon...I'll post up a thread when I'm done reading it :)

We define ourselves by the way we relate to other people. We get deep, lasting, and meaningful satisfaction from giving selflessly to, and being present with, others ...

My patients can't do that. They're struggling with the effects of trauma suffered early in life when they were still developing the brain mechanisms that allow them to relate to other people and the world in general. Unable to trust, they grow up without a sense of self. They're overwhelmed by feelings, unable to cope, always out of control. Their brains tell them to manage the pain by getting loaded. Then, when they find their way to us, we ask them to go back and experience that powerlessness, the very thing that sent them off the rails in the first place. No wonder they resist.

Perhaps I may learn a little bit more of myself by reading it.

"To me, mental health isn't always about feeling good. Nor is it always about avoiding depression. As I define it, mental health is about accepting reality on reality's terms."
Dr. Drew Pinsky

"As a culture, we are woefully disconnected from the biological realities of our lives. We are born, and then, at some point we can't predict, we die." Like Dr. Finely reminds me, "There's never a perfect time to be born, to die or to have a child." We are biological organisms that operate for a finite amount of time. Those are the facts of the human condition and we don't have any control over then. The one thing we can do is exert some control over what we do with our lives between birth and death."
Dr. Drew Pinsky

I dunno, sounds hokey to me.

As there is no such thing as truth or reality.... but rather only perception.

Silly me, I decided a long time ago NOT to allow the perception of others to define MY reality.

Either I am fukkin smart or insane. :)

Either way, works for me. :lmao:

myway - I used to listen to Lovelines or whatever the show was called to laugh my ass off at adam corrolla, and ended up learning a lot from dr drew -- aspoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down i guess

Ur damn smart..I'll give u that. :qt: And wise,2.

But u should still check out the book. Keep in mind these quotes are from a book about certain types of people with disorders. He is not making a general statement about all people and personalities. It's a quote from his' book.
Although, he does speak a little about everyone.

I ain't s'smart. I just hadda learn shit the hard way.

I have heard of this guy (Dr Drew) and for the most part, from what I heard, he sounded like he had a brain and the information he was *peddling* was "on".

I get a bit of a kink in my neck by all the *guru's* with degrees that try to sell bullshit to the masses. When in reality, most of us usually need a good hard kick of reality in our pants.

I was raised to believe that if you are honest then truth will prevail. Well life taught me different (as I am certain you found too - sorry for that, by the way). The fact is it doesn't REALLY matter what *the truth* is. What matters is how WE CHOOSE to percieve OUR REALITY.

Go to court and you will see I am telling you accurate information.

Look at the media. Am I making this shit up?

One thing that EVERYONE who knows about me - whether they *like me* or *hate me* is that I NEVER EVER EVER bullshit. I give MY TAKE on reality the way I TAKE IT. Regardless of how that looks to others or how others "take it."

Y'know?

When you first came to the forums I REALLY thought that you had a screw loose. (Because of the computer trashing thing.) but then I came to realize that it wasn't you at all.... the SITUATION you were in would have cause MOST to blow a headgasket.

Now I see that it was only MY PERCEPTION that was screwy.

YOU seem to be a stand-up woman in a very difficult position.

I could have saved this for PM's.... true. But I felt I owed you a PUBLIC APOLOGY AND AN EXPLANATION....

And though I have said this before both publicly and privately - I want to say it again: I wish you and your son THE BEST.... I know you will do what you need to do to be A STELLAR MOTHER.... You have a good heart. Don't waste it on some ASSWHOLE that don't deserve you.
