Projectors vs big screen TV's...

bulbs are very expensiveb huh?...300-500 $... and only last 2000(?) hours.

It would be wicked though.

My bulb is programmed to quit after 3000 hours which would last about 3 years at three hours/day.

TV's also deteriorate over time.
Is that what it figures too? thats not bad at all.Thats pretty good actually. Is it ceiling mounted or desktop?

I...ummmm....mounted it........ummmm.....over......my bed.

I made a holder for the 6' screen that came with it but the picture looks good to me using a wall. The wall also allows for a bigger picture. Something about lifesize images.

Is the quality of projectors matchable to Plasma big screen?

No! But in a darken room they can't be beat, you will not get a plasma that big.
Plus its a known fact if you can keep it running cooler the bulb will last longer.

I bought a 65inch big screen high def. It was freaking great but I also have alot of experience with using a high def. projector for discussing interesting medical cases in meetings and that is superior IMO. Mainly b/c of the size that you can use and it what was great from the conference room we used was that we could plug all plug our laptops in and present from the seat we were sitting for rapid discussion. People could jump back in forth with images and data without getting out of their seat.

THere is degradation depending on the lighting as it is harder to see than my TV now in a lighter situation but the size of the screen outweighs that. Truly a theatre like experience if setup correctly. If I were to spend the money all over again, hands down Id go for the high def projector.

All of you are right in my estimation. It rocks at night, not so great in the morning when some sunlight trickles in.

Having a 10' picture is pretty cool though. The wall really works about as well as the screen in my estimation.

I can also take it to my other place with a minute of work. Try that with your big screen.

Sucker pumps out some heat though.

I agree with the lighting being a factor. In a perfect world, projectors are better, but not everyone has a completely dark room at any given time. You also need a place to mount it and a deep enough room for it. Bilb life is another issue as mentioned above. People who have dedicated HT rooms that are light controlled and only watch movies with DVDs get the best use out of them.

Some projectors are louder than others and if not in a custom built box behind you, can be a pain. LCD projectors (which is most likely the one you have) have been slowly catching up to CRT based projectors in PQ with a lot lower price tag.

You really need a screen.

What resolution is the projector capable of? What brand/model is it?

I briefly considered a projector, but I have my TV on 10+ hours a day sometimes, so that would'nt have been a good choice. I have a 65 inch HDTV as well right now.

It is a InFocus with 800x600 resolution. Model 4005 maybe?

The noise is not a problem really. Sits about 2' over my head and doesn't bother me.

I have a 6' screen set up but the image on the wall looks just fine to me. Bigger too.

I just bought a 30" LCD for my computer today. Good for Photoshop is my rationalization.

In debt forever....I love to buy shit.

Sigh

4805 Maybe. Seems like a good buy. Congrats. It does accept HD sources. Are you only viewing DVDs with it? Do you use it as a TV?

I would highly reccommend an HD source like an HD channel package and/or an antenna to gett HD channels (if you don't already have those). It's definately worth it. Better than DVDs.

Consider getting it calibrated if you decide to mount it permanently. At least get a calibration disk(DVD) that will walk you through the calibration of the Picture settings (and sound for your sound system). "Video Essentials" or "Avia" calibration discs, either one does the job. Highly recommended, you'll see a great improvement in PQ.

i was recently snooping around, comparing just this question, and in a nutshell, as GL said, its how you use it. if you want to watch normal TV and the occasional movie in a non light controlled room, go for the plasma. if you have the space, light control, and few people going in and out of the room screwing up your lighting, go for the projector.

i wasnt too impressed with the lines that you get on the larger plasma screens, it looks like interference to me, whatever you say.

im leaning heavily towards the projector, since i juse dont watch normal tv, or any tv in the daytime. besides, iave been hanging out to retire this laptop and use it as a media server with a projector...and maybe play some quake :D

Can you elaborate on this? Plasmas are very good but they're quite expensive, although getting less so every day. LCDs are'nt a bad choice either. DLP... They all have their little faults but are way up there in PQ. Maybe the Plasmas you looked at were'nt HD plasmas. Also, some are better quality than others depending on their manufacturers. I've never heard anyone complain about such PQ of a plasma... just the price.

btw the above projector is a dlp projector.

my dad has a projector aswell. I love going there and watching tv. He also just painted his wall white and its perfect.

Since the first day I saw a HD projector in its glory, no tv will ever look quite so nice.
