Prius Owners Here?

About to get a 2010 Gen III Prius V with 44k miles on it. Thing is in great condition inside and out. My one concern is when do you need to replace the battery on these things? Not the 12V but the big boys under body? Having trouble finding info on that.
 
You cannot go wrong with the prius. Even the early ones are great. They RARELY if ever need to be towed/worked on.

You most likely won't own that prius long enough to ever worry about changing the batteries.

I tend to agree with this remark, based on the people I know of who owned them briefly.

Among the things to know, is that they cannot be parked for more than a few days without some kind of a problem with the startup. I don't know the details, but I do know that all the people I know who owned them, had to get them towed to the dealer after they sat for a week or 2. And that's every time; not a coincidental malfunction.

It's none of my business what other people want to drive, but I wouldn't have a Prius (OR ANY HYBRID) as a gift. If you want mileage, get a VW Diesel (easy 55-60mpg highway), and if you want green status, get a gas Civic or Corolla. Both get better MPG than the Prius unless you're going to be delivering pizza (all short city trips), and no problems with weird software updates that the dealer needs to do, and all the other issues. The Prius gets terrible hwy mileage as compared to regular gas or diesel engines, and they don't always tell you that. They just brag about the city mileage, which for many people, is meaningless unless you live in NYC and work 6 blocks away.

Toyota is in my opinion one of the best and most reliable cars out there, but the while hybrid thing is an electromechanical nightmare that fails miserably to live up to it's claims.

I'd have to say it's something your "friends" were doing and not the car itself. Either that or they have one of the earliar generations of the Prius and never had the dealer correct the issue with replacing the starter battery. I've had prius' that sat on the lot for extended periods of time w/o being started and never once had a single issue.

Also, as far as better mileage out of a civic or corolla, well that all depends on the driving situation rather it be in town or highway driving. Even then Combined the prius will out perform the civic and corolla. The Diesel Jetta does phenominal, but it's more expensive.

The one issue (I can it sounds stupid but it happens) is never run the prius out of gas and then drive it until the batteries die. You cannot jump it like a regular car as it takes a special "jumper" and not every dealer carries one as Toyota only alloted so many.
 
Great info in this thread. My GF likes this car. I wonder how much people are saving in gas now.

Depends on the driving situation. "in-town" driving is where the prius will perform the best. One of my salesman drives one and he told me he just filled it up the other day after nearly 2 months. He used it mostly to drive back and forth from work and 1 or 2 interstate trips (roughly 250-300 miles round trip).

100% true! I have averaged 21mpg in a 9,000-lb Chevy 3500 4x4 Diesel crew cab long bed with 10" lift and 38" tires, and about 600 lbs of Ranch Hand iron bumpers and headache rack, commuting from Dallas to L.A; mainly 65mph and steady, with windows shut and A/C off. But if I were to just get on it, and drive in traffic, and stop & go, and run the A/C all the time, I could easily run it down to 12mpg. I collect old Diesel cars, and I've proven 70 mpg in an '84 Corolla 1.8 Diesel. Or I can make it get 40mpg if I floor it all the time, and drive down Wilshire Blvd at 5:00 Friday.

The Prius would actually do worse than imagined on an interstate commute, but as said, it will do fine delivering pizza, or all-city slow traffic & red lights. I hope they did fix the dead batter-after-sitting problem... My sister-in-law had a 2009 Lexus RX400h, which definitely still had the problem, and she returned it to the dealer under the lemon law, and bought a regular RX350. My doctor had an '08ish Prius, which she turned in happily at the end of the 2-year lease, and that was after having to lend it to neighbors repeatedly while she was going back & forth from CA to Panama for a year setting up a clinic. She arranged that because if it sat a week, she'd have to have it picked up and hauled to the dealer when she would get back every time. I know she had all the software updates, but the car still had the dead battery problem despite.
