I tend to agree with this remark, based on the people I know of who owned them briefly.
Among the things to know, is that they cannot be parked for more than a few days without some kind of a problem with the startup. I don't know the details, but I do know that all the people I know who owned them, had to get them towed to the dealer after they sat for a week or 2. And that's every time; not a coincidental malfunction.
It's none of my business what other people want to drive, but I wouldn't have a Prius (OR ANY HYBRID) as a gift. If you want mileage, get a VW Diesel, and if you want green status, get a gas Civic or Corolla. Both get better MPG than the Prius, and no problems with weird software updates that the dealer needs to do, and all the other issues.
Toyota is in my opinion one of the best and most reliable cars out there, but the while hybrid thing is an electromechanical nightmare that fails miserably to live up to it's claims.
