They were orphaned and living on school property so he shot them cuz he didn't want them to starve to death...........and we all know that killing helpless, defenseless animals is easier than taking them to a shelter.....

how does one begin to even contemplate such a thing, regardless of the reason...
I know.. I don't even like cats that much but man kittens are about the cutest thing on the planet

What a dickhead. What, they dont have a rescue society out there? Like the spca or whatever?
No need to kill them, plenty of cats make it out there without homes. Isn't that what strays are called?!
Couldnt he find a decent home? I know plenty of people who enjoy kittens.
Some one should shoot him!

Okay, I'm gonna sound kinda brutal here ... killing is not always cruel, I actually consider knowingly allowing an animal to starve/freeze to death (the article said their mother had been killed in a trap) far crueler than the mercy of a bullet ... but to say that he exercised extremely poor judgement is an extreme understatement.

The kittens would have been easy to trap in a live trap, and if he was such a frigging cat lover that's what he would have done.

I concurr with MM here.

I remember being horrified when summering at my Mama's farm when my aunts would regularly dispose of the mouser's kittens by putting them in a sack with large stones then throwing them into the river so they would drown quickly. But then they explained to me that it was kinder than to have the poor creatures starve to death. And no there is no animal shelter in a place where people are barely able to survive themselves.

This exactly why I wish more people would spay and neuter their pets. It just sickens me to no end when I read stories like these. I have a big weakness for animals but most of all cats.

Just because you take a kitten to a shelter or PETA, doesn't meant that they won't kill them either.

PETA kills cats. Look it up.

I don't think he'd even need to be a cat lover - just someone with a brain.....

What made her think they'd starve?

The problem with stray cats is not the likelihood that they'll starve, but that they'll very likely thrive and reproduce again.

1) Minnesota, not renowned for its temperate climate. When it hits about mid December there the temperature averages 0 until about February or so.

2) I'm assuming they were a late litter, out of the nest but not on their own, which would put them between 2.5 months and under 6 months. Particularly since the guy knew they were still relying on their mom, they were probably in the younger range. They probably wouldn't have made it though the winter at that age, not without an adult teaching them how to survive. Most upper carnivores need to be taught how/what to hunt to kill enough to survive through winter.

The situation should have been handled differently. However, slow starvation and freezing is worse; euthanasia or bullet, the end result is the same.

There is a very important place in pest control for feral cats, but they need to be neutered and vaccinated, have a reliable food and water supply and a safe place to shelter out of the elements. It wouldn't have been any better to have some feral kittens prowling around the school grounds digging into the dumpster for food scraps, suffering with the cold until they eventually died from exposure and/or disease.

The ONLY way feral cats are not euthanized is if they are caught by a private individual or relocated/monitored by a feral cat society that does neuter/vaccinations. 100% of feral cats that are taken into the SPCA are euthanized, and many speciality "cat rescues" will not handle them as they are pretty much unplaceable. You have to remember, if they are not caught before they are 5 or 6 months old it is extremely rare (nearly miraculous) that will ever be tamed (I actually own one like this, she is not a good pet, very timid, skittish, cannot be handled). A true feral cat is a wild animal (there is a big difference between a former housepet that has been dumped to fend on its own and a true feral).

I know what you mean about the feral cats. I trapped 2 at my work and had them fixed. They now live at our home outside. The closest I've gotten to them is at feeding time and sometimes they come up and smell my hands touching them w/ their nose. Other than that, you won't get near them. Also have a feral cat inside I caught at work as a kitten. He's semi okay w/ us though somewhat aloof, but damn let a stranger in the house and he immediately goes into hiding until they're gone.

These people live where THE PEOPLE can barely live. A cat is of no consequence in the grand scheme of things to them and it is quite humane to dispose of them quickly.

I could never hurt a flea but if I thought an animal would suffer and die slowly I would pick up a rock and crush it's skull personally.

You can agree to disagree. It's all good with me.

I've shotten cats who walk on and scratch my car.

Most people are too irresponsible and ignorant to have pets......or kids.

Can't believe stories like this even make press? Honestly, who gives a shit about a couple of dead moggies?

My thoughts exactly and I can't find a reporter to publicize my story. Sent countless emails. Actually got hung up on by a radio station when I called in. All to no avail.

I dont know whether people just prize the lives of animals more in this country, that they dont CARE about anyone but themselves or if they just dont believe it is actually happening.

Yes, well, they didn't see it, but students heard gunshots and parents went apeshit.

I know. That way they'll be euthanized and their lives will be saved.

I strongly disagree with him shooting the kittens

...running them over with a push mower would have been much more enjoyable!

I see your point... The guy wasnt really thinking about how THE NOISE would scare peeps in light of the extreme sensitivity that our sick society has caused. I am willing to wager that this guy grew up in a different time where NO ONE could have dreamed that all the ASSTARD parents would have raised the generation of disturbed kids they have.

But then again, I could be talking out of my asshole.
