Prenatal Vitamins: Why is it that...

no matter how many regular vitamins you take, they never seem to be as strong as just one prenatal vitamin? Do they manufacture these things for better absorption or something?

Do you mean the milligram or microgram doses on prenatals are higher than others or that they appear to absorb better?

Both. They are much higher. So if you take the equivalent amount of regular vits (to total the same RDA %), it never seems to do the same thing as the prenatal vit.

Personally, I use liquid vitamins and colloidial minerals, but I was just curious if anyone else had noticed this about the prenatals.

Im lost. How do you know they absorb better? I can see reading the label for sheer quantity of vitamins/minerals though.

I have heard that a lot about pre-natal vitamins. I have a friend who badgers all her preg. friends for leftover pre-natals...

I'm not saying I know they absorb better, I'm asking:

When I take prenatal vitamins my fingernails start growing really fast. lol

You can get them from the drug store too. lol'

When I was pregnant I think I took the Country Life brand prenatal vits. You don't need a scrip.

I know the form (substrate ?) the vitamin comes in plays a big part in how well it is absorbed. Like calcium carbonate vs. calcium whatever-ate (help me out here ladies!). Could be this is the difference.

with prenatals there is a high iron content (b/c you need more when you're pregnant)... maybe the iron affects the absorption? there's also higher zinc i believe too...

as far as the fingernails, i knew what caused it, but i forget... (big help eh? :) )

I took prenatals that didn't have iron because I have really high iron anyway. The extra iron made me kind of sick to my stomach and gave me headaches. Even now I take a separate vit and min because if I take a full dose of minerals I get horrible headaches.

When I get my iron tested at my annual exam the docs always ask if I'm a smoker because my iron levels are so high.

Anya, yeah, that's KEL, and I thought about just asking over there but I'm sure she'll be around eventually.

Folic Acid helps with absorbtion. Are the prenatal vits higher in that. Also about the hair growth, my hair is falling out because of my thyroid meds, do you think that the prenatals would help with that?

maybe w6 or ms knows-

But I've wondered this myself- I've used them for 8+ years as my daily vitamin because they've been free. Maybe they don't have as many inert ingredients in them. I'll ask babydoc if he knows when he gets home tonight :)

...oh and spatts you're welcome over there any time ;)

Yes, that's how I know that I was taking the same amount of each.

...and yes, Rn, they are VERY high in folic acid.

i found this little blurb,

apparently some are made for higher absorption... they "contain digestive enzymes because absorption is often more difficult during pregnancy"

but he's referring to prescription prenatals (i didn't know there were such beasts, i know that a lot of places keep the vitamins behind the pharmacy counter, but i didn't think you had to have scripts for them... )
