Yeah I read it in a psych study my father in law worked on. In the design of basic training for military service one of the major objectives is to get recruits to overcome there inate insticts towards preservation rather than destruction.

I understand it in the military sense because there is more motivation to save yourself than to kill someone you do not know (and that has never done you harm).

I am speaking in civilian and social terms when you have had some sort of contact with the people you want to kill (no matter how brief)
