Pre-teen working out

Hi all,
My son has been after me to workout for the past year. He's about 10 1/2 yrs old. Any take on whether I should let him workout? Isn't he too young? Please let me know...

That may be a little TOO young to start in with the weights..........what is it like4th or 5th grade? He's still growing big time, joints are sealed, and if he gets hurt now, it's all up hill for the next 30-40+ years.....Get him to start thinking about eating right, while incorporating calestenic (running, stretching, push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups...) Train for the physcially challenge....than, once he turns pubescent, get him a set of weights...........no need to rush it!
 
I agree...stick with the basics (pushups, situps, crunches, chin/pull ups) on top of calisthenics and he should be in good shape for when he's actually ready to lift in a few years
 
I agree with everyone. Puberty is a good time to start as far as safety goes, plus you need to remember, at 10 1/2 years old, most kids do not have the emotional maturity to be consistent and give 100% of themselves to training, and there is nothing wrong with that, they're just little kids.

I would say, like everyone else, bodyweight exercises, stretching, running, etc. and save the weights until he is 13 or 14. I personally think the summer before 9th grade is a perfect time to start weightlifting,
 
thanks for the input. I feel the same, but it's hard telling my kid no when he sits there watching me work out and wanting the same as me.
 
I agree with everyone else. Make sure he's eating right so there are no bad habits to break later, and make sure that he stays active.
 
I started at 14. 13 might be a good age. I wouldnt mind having an extra year of training behind me, looking back. I wouldve done it earlier too if it was available. But it may be best to wait until 13-14.
