Pre-contest dieting: how much black coffee is too much?

New member
I currently drink anywhere from 2-3 cups of black coffee per day now, just started doing this and i'm two weeks out from competiton. And just yesterday, i came up with a concauction of a pre workout meal. After taking my ephedrine, i usually have a shake an hour before training. Well, i decided to mix my protein shake with a hot coffee, for an extra buzz. Not only did i get the preworkout lift i needed but what a fucking cup of coffee. I mixed in vanilla whey protein powder and it tasted like a french vanilla capuccino. Amazing to the point where i felt i had just cheated on the diet.
Let me know what you guys think.

yes, you'd better have caffeine with your ephedrine

a good dosage is
X mg ephedrine HCl (ie 40mg)
10X mg caffeine (ie 400mg)

BTW 2-3 cups of black coffee is not much
I can have 7-8 ('cause I love it :p )

I was under the impression that excessive heating could denature protein powder - rendering it useless as far as absorption is concerned....

...anyone have input on this? Because it sounds like a great idea....to make that black coffee taste better....but if it destroys the peptides....there's not much benefit....

yes, heat cause protein chains to coagulate and denature

but mixing hot coffee with your powder is OK (but don't put the 2 in the microwave !)

BTW the albumen (egg white) loses its functionality at temperatures > 130°C

I guess I am missing something here. How would that be different? Just curious as if this something that can work well I will be doing this today pre-workout.

I actually discussed this with my doctor (the denaturing part) and denaturing a protein doesn't necessarily make it less absorbable.

The curds in cottage cheese are denatured milk proteins

Tofu is denatured soy protein

When egg whites go from runny & clear to firm and white...guess what? You guessed it!

Denturing simply means changing the tertiary structure of the protein. I think absorbability at best can only be assesed on a case-by-case basis. I have heard on numerous occasions that Raw eggs are LESS absorbable than cooked (denatured) eggs.

Therefore while lumpy curds in your protein coffee are nasty, I have seen no evidence that the protein has been rendered unabsorbable.
