PR on sumo dead

this was the second time doing sumo deads. I got used to the movement real quick. much easier than conventional for me. well, here is what I pulled:

2 warm ups of 135x5

185x5
225x3
245x3
285x2
315x1

and then the last set, I tried pulling 335, but it seemed like the weights were GLUED to the floor and the bar was bending. I could not pull that for the life of me. I almost did not pull the 315, but it got easier as I ascended. bringing it down gently was tough.

I like sumo deads because they are easier, but I also like conventional deads because they require more muscles to in the movement.

GENTLY?? Its a deadlift man...just drop it.

Nice pull...

Typically, the most difficult part of the Sumo dead is breaking it from the floor. Usually if a Sumo puller breaks the floor it will be a successful lift.

Typically, the most difficult part of the Conventional dead is right at the knees. Usually if a Conv. puller gets the bar over the knees it will be a successful lift.

IMHO.

Is a sumo deadlift basically pulling with your legs outside of your arms?? In other words, are the legs to the side of your arms when you grip the bar? Would that constitute a sumo DL??

Maybe I will put some wd-40 on my shoes and "slide" from a conventional to sumo stance as the bar gets to my knees...lol

Would that not be the funnies thing you ever saw...lol...I'd hit the splits...

Sorry...just got a funny thought of me actually doing that..

When I sumo (which is rare) I need to put it down gently else I usually crush my toes......I set up with my toes almost touching the plates and if I drop it half an inch from where the bar started it can hurt alot.

It might also be that his gym does like you dropping plates......its sad but these places exist.

now that is a wide stance if I ever heard one. I deadliftin the power rack so the other gym members don't get in my way. craziness in the cage, which also restricts how far I can get my feet out.

good job dude. our stats are about the same. my PR for a conventional dead is 315 for 2, at 5'9, 165-170lbs. i just need to gain some goddamn weight now. haha.

If they don't like you dropping plates...then it is probably a "Fitness Center".

:lmao:

I can pull with my feet to the plates, but my arms are so long and my legs are so...average...that I only have to pull what seems like 6 inches to lock it out.

My legs are pretty long as are my arms (great combination for powerlifting.....I don't think!!)....so even with that wide a stance I am pulling the bar a good 18inches. I still prefer conventional though.....less technical.

We might want to experiment with sumo for you....see how it compares.

goober, we just did them like a week ago...I'm pulling mid 300's on both. They are equally comfortable for me, I just prefer conventional.

Spatts- when I go sumo, I go feet to plates and when I go conventional my heels are only about 3" apart max. So there is a huge difference in my stances and I think it translates to about a 6" difference in ROM.

The funny thing is that I think I have very good form in the sumo, near perfect, but I don't think I am strong enough to totally beat my conventional in that form. I dunno.

It would make more sense, in terms of competition, for me to pull sumo...it's got be at LEAST 8 inches shorter for me...if not closer to a foot. I just don't feel as "confident" in sumo even though the numbers are comparable. Perhaps I should practie it until I'm more confident with it.

Sounds like a plan....we will start working on it more. Pull some of your speed sets like that. And do some as a second movement on ME day.

Practice..practice..practice....find what works

I always thought that with my gorilla arms I would pull better sumo...wrong. I lose all speed that way. It may be sumo technique (lack of) but I just feel so much more comfortable in a conventional stance...a lot faster too.
