I am quite new to all of this powerlifting terminology and federations, and I am thinking of having a go.

Obviously the lifts are assisted (the single ply gear/suits) and wraps (is that for knees and elbows?) or unassisted, by age and/or weight.

Is there anything else that I need to know about the different federations, are any better with athletes or for women competing than others?

I am seriously considering doing a comp during the off season.

Thanks for posting. Several of my training partners are from England (one is actually from Wales) and they are wanting to do powerlifting on the Base here and to keep going when they get back to the UK. I haven't known any direction to point them though.

The contests that they want to compete in here don't allow any support gear at all, not even knee wraps. I think that they do allow wrist wraps though.

There are inter-forces comps in the UK run under IPF rules which are drug-tested. So this would be with single-ply kit.

Anyone fancying competing at the end of this year could try this...

[The GPC-GB covers those lifters who were in the BPC, but wanted to be able to still compete in the European based international federation called the GPC, when the BPC decided to leave the GPC and just send lifters to the USA-based WPC for internationals. There is a whole load of politics and history around this! But, quite a few lifters lift in both.]

I'll talk to the guys, but they said that they were not allowed to wear anything except wrist wraps.

The totals to qualify or to set the records were VERY low as well. I'm pretty sure that I could walk in and set the records for the squat and deadlift without training.

Mr. Monday, what do all those abbreviations mean?

Mr. Monday, what do all those abbreviations mean?

GPC - Global Powerlifting Committee GPC - Global Powerlifting Committee - www.globalpowerliftingcommittee.comwhich is European based

The GPC affiliated in Great Britain is called the GPC-GB.

BPC - British Powerlifting Congress Home - British Powerlifting Congress (BPC)

The BPC is affiliated to the World Powerlifting Congress World Powerlifting Congresswhich is USA based

There is a summary of all the feds on the Powerlifting Watch website - UK is at the bottom of the page Compare Powerlifting Federations | Powerlifting Watch

I think you have already picked up on the BDFPA - British Drug Free Powerlifting Associaiton, BPO - British Powerlifting Organisation and GBPF Great Britiain Powerlifting Federation & IPF affiliate.

All the associations seem to welcome novices, women and natural athletes (even if they are untested feds). There is no obligation to lift in supportive kit. But you do need a singlet and to be aware of the clothing rules i.e. no gloves, socks to protect shins when deadlifting for GBPF etc.

I think GBPF and BDFPA run dedicated raw comps, while at the others you can choose to lift raw. Some feds may not run raw comps but will still have raw records, so it is worth checking this.
