Powder Conversion Question

a creed

Banned
If I buy 100% pure, filtered Soy oil, can I skip the baking process for the oil?

What's the reason the Dissolved Powder in the oil needs to be run through a Whatman Filter?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Baking the oil is not a necessary step, although some do it when buying unfiltered oil. The final solution MUST be run through a whatmans filter to maintain clarity and sterility. .45micron for clarity, .20micron for sterility. I would suggest .20micron but it is difficult when making small batches and just using a syringe filter.

I have to point out that the filtering process is only that, filtering. It is a means of removing particulate matter. You might get some large bacteria but as a whole alot of bacteria and all virues would pass through even a .2 micron filter. The BA does the sterilizing.

Was the oil labeld "serile?" I mean, did you buy from a gear source who had sterilized the oil or is this oil you've bought from a grocery store? When I buy sterile oil from a source, I don't filter it, but when I buy grape seed oil from the grocery story, i run it through a .2 whatman. It's very thin and goes through very quickly and with a single filter you can make enough oil to last you a year or more.

Again sterility and Filtering are separate issues....So if you bought sterile oil with chunks of glass in it you wouldnt filter it? You dont ever have to pre filter oil. Sterile oil is more expensive, thats it. You filter once, thats after your gear is made. The benzyl alcohol sterilizes it. Filtering removes the little pieces of this and that left after everything is in solution. Thats all it does.

Are those little "bits" dangerous if injected?

Depends on what the little "bits" are. Personally, I wouldn't want anything except the oil, BA/BB, and gear itself going into my muscle. Spending a couple of bucks on a .45 whatman to make 100-200mls of gear seems more than worth it to me. The BA will sterilize any bacteria/virus particles that make it through the filter, the filter removes any larger particulate matter that's not in solution, whether it's fillers, binders, cutters, whatever, that you don't want in your final solution.

Most likely no...but thats why you filter at the end to "filter" out the whatever is left. And certianly whatever slips through your filter is not dangerous. Youve allready added BA to "sterilize". So now if youve done it right, you have a solution that is sterile and Particulate free.
