Potential Employer Paranoid?!

A friend of mine told me about a job as a Medical Liaison at a company her friend owns, which is a work-from-home job. It would be a great addition to my practice and a great extra income.

I went to the interview last week and the guy was open enough to tell me he googled me and FB'ed me. He was asking all kinds of questions on posts he found on me, once in particular about a FB where I was posting on about Natural Healing.
He then actually googled me in front of him.
He saw I was a mod on a health board etc......I have nothing to hide!
He went on and on about his son who is celiac and asking me lots of questions about diet and foods etc.

At the end of the intervie, he said "You are perfect for this job and I think we would work really well together, you can start next week, but I need to speak to reference and not just have a reference letter"

I was like "Ok, but I've known your best friend for 2 yrs who refereed me to this job and I am sure she told you how I am, but I can give you 2 references in any case"

I gave him the name of the ND who trained me and the head of the HR dept of the company I was at for 11 yrs.

He emails me today "I need more, they both gave you glowing references but I just want to talk to some of your friends"

I mean WTF???! He owns a great company and the money is good, but if he is like this to work for, I am leery now!
 
That's ridiculous. Going thru Facebook in front of u? Lol. Next thing u know he's gonna be asking for a credit report and previous boyfriend's phone #s.

I'd give him a shot if its a REALLY good job but now u know to be weary of him getting into ur personal shit.

why isnt your FB private?

2nd, why does he need to talk to your friends? that has nothing to do with your professional career. and if they are your friends, they will also give "glowing" remarks.

seems weird to me.
 
Oxy, I know right.......just too much! I mean I get that it's a company where being discreet is an issue, but it just seems like too much.

It's my work FB page, so it's public. The more traffic I get, the more clients I get.

I know, I said "well you can speak to my friends, but they will tell you only nice things"

It seems odd!

Smurf, his company provides medical records and finds medical professionals (allopathic and others) to Dr's and patients who don't have time to do that. He's been in business a long time and his company is growing so he must know what he's doing.
He has MD's and RN's on staff also

yea, red flags for sure.. i'd let him know that during your investigation of his company and if you want to work with him you'd like to speak to his accountant and attorney to find out if there are any outstanding lawsuits you need to be aware of.. also you'd like to speak with his neighbors..

just as an example of how he's making you feel.
 
The only thing that comes to mind is that legally speaking, I'm not sure employers can give more than confirming dates of hire and eligibility for rehire, but it sounds like he got plenty more than that from the two references you gave.

I know it's not unheard of to ask for personal, non work references to get a character assessment, but again....doesn't seem to apply here.

3 way refence will get the job done every time. Give reference for somebody you worked for, with, and someone who worked for you. Above, equal and below.

this^^^ tell him you'd like him to sign a waiver and consent for credit report too. What a weirdo.

No, he's a very religious jew with a wife and 4 kids. Though, I am irresistible and he did keep me in the interview for 90 mins talking about gluten and my kosher raw food bars I sell :-)

I worked for the largest valve manuf in the world for 11 yrs and at the interview, they didn't even check references or ask, It was enough that my bro in law worked there and vouched for me.

This guy has 15 people working for him and his best friend, who is a good friend of mine, referred me to him, so it just seems so off.

But yes I can see he is trying to see my character, but man, he will only know once I work with him. If he doesn't like me, then he can let me go
 
It does seem rather odd to be going this extreme. I had a job that took 7 interviews but they were not and never should be that personal.
It's a job not marriage.

I spoke with the people I gave him references for and they said he never even called them? Yet he is asking for more?
I emailed him today and he said "Am looking into it and can we meet tomorrow?"

I replied "I have clients after 1pm so can meet you in the morning or am free all day Friday" and he never replied

This is odd
 
It does seem odd. See, stuff like this is weird. I only read the first couple posts but keep your eye on this one. Bizarre.
 
what I was thinking was maybe he is bluffing and just needs time to do a criminal check on me or some sort of background check and he's waiting for results. I mean, it's really not that intense of a job that he would need to do that

You can mash up a bunch of raw uncooked food and it's still raw.
It is processed, but they are not claiming it's unprocessed, at least I don't think
They taste awesome so it's all good
