Postworkout carbs at night

skinnyfat

New member
I work out at night, and don't get home until 8:30 or 9, so I basically eat and go to bed. Should I still be eating some carbs to replenish glycogen, or is this too late for carbs, even though it is postworkout? Of course, I wouldn't be increasing my daily calories or overall carbs, just thinking about saving some for postworkout.

Par Deus stated in answer to a similar question that there is no fundamental difference in eating carbs later in the evening versus earlier in the day with regards to being fattening. The only problem I can think of is that it would produce an insulin spike, which may or may not interfered with GH production, which occurs primarily during sleep.

I think you're ok skinnyfat, I do the same thing. Workout late, post-workout shake around 9pm. I think if your carbs are complex and are in moderate amounts, you should be fine.

have low gi carb eg sweet potato after training. it will repair and give u gains. otherwise you will not grow...no growth=less mucsle, more fat

Thanks, guys. My thinking is that if you have depleted your glygogen stores, then your muscles will soak up the carbs pretty fast, so by the time you hit the hay, there probably won't be any excess glucose hanging around in your bloodstream, so you are OK.

I think so too. Especially for those of us who stay up pretty late.

so its the high GI carbs late at night that make u fat ? so if you do eat carbs late at night make them low gi right ???

just have low gi carbs after you workout at night. eg chicken and sweet potato. but after that post workout meal stop carbs

Hi or low GI, it's the carbs that aren't absorbed by the muscles or liver and stay in the bloodstream that make us fat. Whenever we eat carbs, they are released into the blood, and insulin is produced to take the sugars in the blood and drive it into muscles or the liver. Once liver and muscles are filled, only then does insulin drive the blood sugar into fat cells. It also happens when there is too much sugar in the blood for the muscles and liver to absorb at a given time. This occurs either when you eat excessive amounts of carbs, or when you eat high GI carbs. When you eat high GI carbs, the sugars get in the bloodstream at a rate faster than the muscles and liver can absorb them, so insulin has to turn the excess sugar into fat. Low GI carbs are released into the blood more slowly, therefore the muscles and liver can absorb them. But if the liver and muscles are already filled, there is nowhere for the carbs to go but to fat cells, even if they are low GI.

The thing is, after you work out, your muscles absorb the carbs at a faster rate than normal, so even if you eat high GI carbs, the muscles will have absorbed them before they are turned into fat, unless you absolutely gorge.

It is consuming more calories in a given period than you burn that makes you fat -- we usually use 24 hours as a reference because of simplicity.

It does not make a significant difference if they are low or high GI or if you have every single one of them 2 minutes before falling asleep for the night.

You may increases lipogenesis for several hours during that time period, but it will be made up for by the increased lipolysis during the rest of the day when intake is lower.
