I have a very good friend who event trains with me on Sundays. He is 57, tree doctor (arborist), and very very poor. He hardly has a dollar to his name and has zero friends except for our crew that we train with. He has 2' of steel holding his spine together, steel pins in his shoulders, one leg is about 4" shorter than the other, abcess filled abdomen, 3 heart attacks last October, several nerve surgeries in his arms etc, and no medical insurance.
Every Sunday he brings about 10 five gallon buckets to my house and fills them up with water. He doesn't have running water at his house. He is a good man, good Christian, is always clean, and wears his best (worse than my worst) clothes to church on Sunday, etc...
He was an alternate on the 1984 Olympic javelin throwing team and is currently trying to make it to the Pro Long Ball Golf nationals tournament. I know that 10 years ago he hit a golf ball 550 + yards...just amazing strength on this man.
I see him sick and down often yet he never misses a workout with us on Sunday. He called me last Sunday and was very sick...but said that he was on his way out to train...with his friends.
What happens to him when he dies? He doesn't have any money, no family, and very few friends. His foster parents passed several years ago in Canada. My family and our lifting crew are his friends...but what will he do if he gets extremely sick and has to be put in the hospital for a month or so?
This is just something that has been in the back of my mind for a while as I continually see him get older and in very sick at times.
