my impression is that they've gotten much better over the years, and that lcd can be fairly hungry as well. i have a feeling that most of the perceived issues with plasma are largely things of the past (except for glare and reflections from the glossy screen), although they do require more attention and effort than and lcd.
i want a new tv soon. i think i'll have to go lcd because i want some light in my room.
i'm waiting to see what the new samsungs (a950) and sonys (xbr7/8) are like. led backlight should make for some sick black levels.

LED DLP's are the most energy efficient tv's out there.
I never liked the look of plasmas either. My samsung LCD with proper settings is excellent.

Anyway, the specs they give are not a real life power draw. It is a maximum output draw that you will never really acheive. It is closer to what the LCD's give out than one would initially think.
I know the Panasonics have very good anti reflective screens/filters or whatever they're calling it now. They are making good progress as JA said. I just think they don't market the plasmas as much because they have less profit margins. Plasmas are great TV's, especially if they fit your room's conditions.

I highly doubt that, especially at $3,000. Most 1080p's are under $2,000 now, not to mention techs like DLP/LCD are far more conservative both maintenance and energy-wise. Plasmas are like the car that needs 500 horsepower and a gallon of fuel to get a 12 second quarter mile vs LCD/DLP which could do it with less than half that.

Plasma's generate some serious heat. They draw more current and are worse in high light conditions. They do have better coloring and black ratio's (typically).
Personally I am an LCD fan, with proper signal and set up they look great.
All the stats in the world are pointless, unless you have a plasma and lcd side by side you will never have to worry about it. They both have potential to look great
