pics from New Orleans

Hey I got 52 pics from the hell hole called home. Which image service will give http urls so we can see the images?

test...

kewl , ok pintoca is gonna hlep me out, after I turn off my firewall...

Here's the story. I was going to my moms house because she felt as if she lost everything. It turns out that it wasn't so bad. Most of Metairie and Jefferson didn't look all that damaged. It's the 17th street levee breaking (which I have pictures of and them working on patching the hole) and the flooding that came next that did all the damage

I was lucky just to get in there. The army had checkpoints at I55 south in ponchatoula , I10 east @ laplace and at Airline drive in St rose. My old Louisnana ID came in handy and I used it to get into Jefferson parish... Anyway the pics are of Metairie and Jefferson. I got in there after Ray Nagin ordered a "forced" evacuations so te army wasn't letting ANYONE into the Orleans Parish , which would have been the juicy stuff with dead bodies and all. These pics are bad enough.

Anyway I need to turn off my firewall so I can get pintocs the pics so he can host them

Problem is that the pics were shot with a 6.1 megapixel camera and they are in 6.1 megapixel format. So the pics are big. All 52 pics are about 115 megs

if you have photoshop or any other picture program that came with your camera, you can make them smaller

you can use irfanview to reduce them by 50%... for screen viweing, 6 Megapixels is overkill... get them down to 1280x1ß24 and that will more than suffice

slowly but surely theyare being uploaded. I will need to put captions on the picture so you know what it is you're looking at. The bacteria and mold INSIDE my moms house was so thick , it can harm you severly. I wanted the full extent of the damage INSIDE the house and around town to be displayed so I am uploading as is. 1/2 done

still here

Now for the reality
The wind damage in Jefferson Parish was not all that bad. I lived with my folks in Metairie in this house

and the neighborhood looks like this

A dumpster is supposed to be off the picture to the left , but it has caught a power cable and is in the middle of the parking lot

Yeah that's what it looked like after Isabel hit my neighborhood. But that isn't the worst of Katrina at all.

Not even close to the worse.

My moms house is completely unlivable. Every hotel on i10 from New Orleans to Houston is booked. All hotels on I55N from New Orleans to Memphis TN are booked. I was lucky enough to find a Mariott in CBD Jackson MS that had a few rooms left on Saturday night (2 days ago)

Anyway back to moms place... The bacteria would probably kill you if you inhaled it long enough. This is what the flooding INSIDE my moms house looked like.

For all those that don't know Airline drive is a road that you can go all the way from baton Rouge to New orleans. The eastern part of airline drive is now a river...
I wish I would have gotten out of the car and snapped about 4 more picture , but I was in total shock at this point. the blurryness is insects that hit my windshield and have completely covered the front of my car (04 Impala SS Indy)
There was so much standing water in New orleans that they needed to stop airline drive and convert it into a canal...

ugh... there's a lot of damage to the house it seems, but at least its still there. the bacterial removal is going to be a mess- all the drywall and flooring, appliances, etc.
that sucks.

These few pictures are the cause of everything....
The 17th street canal is a border between Jefferson Parish and Orleans Parish. There is a bridge at 17th street. On the Jefferson side , this is a part of town called "bucktown'. You will find New Orleans famous restaurants like "two tony's" and "Sid mar's" and "Deanies" "Jaugers" On the new orleans side , there is a housing area which leads to University or New Orleans. I guess this would be called "lakeside" New Orleans

Here are the pictures I was able to squeeze of the levee and the army trying to patch the break before state police grabbed me...

This is the army sandbagging the hole that is several hundred yards long. 2 weeks after it broke thye are STILL trying to fix it

And this top of this picture is the army trying to put higher steel in place to reinforce the concrete levee

Your moms house looks terrible. It's amazing how fast that mold, mildew, fungus and bacteria grew. There must be some nasty shit in the water. Literally.

Damn bro, I'm so sorry to hear about your parents' house man. I'm glad we didn't have to worry about the water at my house, but down at the beach it's a diff. story. First came the winds and then the water and it's like a bomb went off down there. I'm getting the pics off my other comp. and i'll have em up in a min.
Could you get close enough to six flags? It was underwater, don't know if it still is, which is pretty obvious considering where it sits. I was looking at aerial photos they took right after the storm. here's a link for anyone who wants to look:

the thing is tho, you can watch the news and look at all the pics out there, but you can't get a real sense of what it's like w/ out actually being there and seeing it.

(The rafters and our fan that I don't think we'll be using again :) That ceiling is like 15ft. high so you can imagine the amount of sheetrock that was up there.)

(our living room where the ceiling came down, go that was a mess, took 3 days to clean all that shit up, most of it I did. That room is like 900 sq or more)

No it wasn't too bad, it was getting kind of moldy in some spots though. That shit is heavy when it's wet but hard as hell to pick up when it's dry because it's so light you can't grab a lot at once.

I'm glad Metarie was semi-spared. I might be down in that area after we get to Waveland to set some stuff up.

8 more days for me before I leave

I'm sorry but I must rant at this point. If politicians (Bill Clinton AND George W Bush) would have funded the levee ,Mississippi would be overwhelmed with help right now. But since people cut the funding for the New orleans levee board, the troops are spread thin trying to rescue people in New Orleans (some 1.5 million people) and in gulfport , biloxi , pascagoula , wavelan , etc

I wonder if the people at the Mississippi delta Plaquamines Parish have gotten much help at all.

Six Flags Under Water has been shown on TV a number of times.

Yeah I'm not sure how they are doing up that way. Like I said I'm satisfied w/ their response here, yes it could have prolly been better, esp. if what you mentioned had been done.

GJ,

First off, I am glad your family and you are safe and sound. Its a sad tragedy and public health disaster the impact of the hurricane on the people down there. You and your family are in my prayers and honestly if your mom wanted to come to Boston, I have room. Just let me know.

My mom fled to her brothers house in Huntsville , AL along with my sister. They are good for now.

I am glad that she has family to help her out down there.

Initially we were expecting 2,500 Hurricane Katrina evacuees who are being shelted on Cape Cod for up to two months and likely resettling permanently in the Bay State. I think only around 250 wanted to come so far up North.

Just to let you know, they are being treated like celebrities and have had nothing but praise for all of the people up here that are able to help them out.

I think it is a good choice for those who don't have family down there.
Just an FYI bro.
talk to you soon.

I can talk from experience that would be a huge adjustment. Living down south all your life and then making a permenent relocation to Boston or anywhere in New England for that matter.

Down south you don't have to worry about water pipes freezing , driving on ice and what not. Boston has one of the highest costs of living whereas down south in New Orleans it or worse Mississippi things are alot cheaper. But up north, you don't have the bugs of down south...

There are advantages

Yeah we do. We have West Nile and EEE right now.

Any idea what happened to Veterans Boulevard in Metarie?
