1-20 is their gate position, 20 being far outside, 1 being close to the inside fence. Being all the way outside can be a disadvantage.

Your horse has a good gate position. Just as the outside is at a disadvantage, so are the first few spots. This is because they load the ponies starting at gate 1. So those horses that are first in the gate are likely to get restless or distracted due to the wait time.
