PIC -- Ike Flood Causes Coffins to Rise to Surface

same thing happened in new orleans.

and yes, i was actually there...not just looking at photos on the internet.

oh well, just another reason why i live at a mile above sea level...

i remember watching the flood in texas a loooong time ago on CNN and they showed caskets floating down streets and pretty much anywhere. i guess the majority of the older graves didn't have vaults. the odd thing is i remember a casket floating and it was OPEN. you could see the lining inside of the casket and everything. when i go i don't want a vault (is it law that you have to have one these days?) i want scuba gear or a shark fin tied to my back just in case something like that happens in my area.

how the hell did that happend? around here the coffins go inside a "volt" deal that is heavy as fuck, almost like concrete.

those are actually the granite slabs and they aren't floating
the caskets beneath them are stressing the granite and you can see enough pressure in a few of the graves has caused the granite to lift some
the pressure comes from decomp gases and I imagine saturating the ground to that extent around the graves has allowed for some shifting and I think that level of water emtombment has probably flooded some of the older and/or cheaper constructed caskets
and the whole integrity of the grave and casket is compromised

from the looks of it, it appears this cemetery mandates the use of the expensive grave slab as I imagine this is in an area that could be expected to flood
but you can only do so much and people don't want to drive 50 miles to mamma's grave

There was another pic on the site with actual caskets out of their vaults washed up on the ground, as if someone had dug 'em up and tossed 'em aside. But that photo was in a Flash presentation, so I couldn't right click and save it. :(

i wanna be buried with my ass sticking out of the ground. that way i can still fart for awhile and peeps visiting there loved ones can watch my o ring deteriorate! my make a neat vase...

most cemeteries require a vault
a vault not only protects the grave but it supports the fill in dirt around the grave so the grave doesn't sink in overtime
when we fill in a grave we have to refill sections of the grave after a couple of good rainfalls
the rain saturates the dirt and compacts it so we have to go in after that and put more dirt around the sunken areas
and finally after a few rainfalls it's ready to be sodded

Sparticus I just want to thank you for your vast knowledge on the burrying of the dead! Uggghhhh Did he say wood?
