Phil Collins

Phil Collins left an indellable sp? impression on my psyche in the growing years. Great artist and innovator. He invented his own sound and a brand new style of playing drums and drum sounds. Seems that artists like this just don't come along anymore.

After all. why would a record company that's interested in maxing profits take a chance on a developing artist and nourish him for years with the possibility of losing all their investments, when they alread have winning formulas in place that thay can use. Just fill in the people and let the wheels turn. Just look at all the manufactured stars today. It's heavily masked and denied, but you know it's true. Most of the music we listen to today is manufactured and designed to please the customer instantly, to catch him or her with a catchy tune. That means big profits for the record company. Intellectual growth? Intellectual stimulation? Artistry? Bah, why bother, give them what they want right away and collect the cash. I though a while back that it was only pop music that was subject to this phenomena, but then i saw it was Rock as well, then Rap and now all music styles follow a surefire "FORMULA".

A good example of todays musical innovators with commercial sucess is COLD PLAY. A very good sound, very different, very raw and hand made. Their sucess shows that there is a vacuum for something fresh. Ofcourse it came from Europe, the Mecca for art in todays world :) . America is great at learning and putting learned lessons into practice but sometimes lags in innovations.

phil's solo music so goddamn boring. he had a zillion hits in the 80s and each one was worse than the other. (except "i can't dance" which was not a big hit). i like his drums on "i know there's something going on" by the girl from abba, i think her name is Frida.
