People with Kids...... School Uniforms ?

Y_lifter

New member
OK, first thing, please hold your Pedophile comments to a minimum as this is a serious question.

If your Kids must wear a Uniform to School, " Do you like that" ?
If your kids DON'T wear a Uniform to School, do you wish they did?
What do your kids think about wearing a Uniform to School ?

My Daughter has always gone to private School and worn a Uniform. She doesn't know any different and has no problems with it.
Vix mentioned how easy it is to get them ready in the morning for school and I agree.
Also down here, most Schools give you a choice of 3-4 things you can wear, usually the same color.

Shorts or Docker style Pants with a Polo type shirt and sneakers
Girls can wear the same or a jumper(lame) or Skorts and sneakers

They give the kids free dress days several times a year to wear what ever they want with limits.

Just wondering, as School is starting back up and some Public Schools have discussed uniforms being brought into all schools in the County.

Scooh unis will dramatically reduce the continual teasing if a child does not have name-brand labels on their possesions

Uniforms are the best thing for kids in school, IMO. Like Corn said, no teasing or harassing from others about who has what.

It has made my life so much easier ...FACT!

Bri picked out all her new uniforms for kindergarten this year. She looks so preppy! CUTE CUTE CUTE!

I agree, no label games with the uniform solution.

I would imagine most parents are OK with Uniforms except for maybe those liberal free spirit types.

"It restricts my child's ability to express themselves bla bla"

Instead of expressing themselves with designer clothes and $80 Nike's, they need to be
expressing their butts into the seat and listening up... IMO

dude, I wish I had a uniform when I was a kid. I still relive moments in high school and junior high when I wore JAMS that my mother made. I never heard the end of that.

My parents both went to catholic school and both loved uniforms. They said it made getting dressed for school less of a hassle and the uniformity made for less teasing (at least about clothes). On a slight off note, I notice that a lot of clothes made for little girls is really "sexy". That weirds me out. I don't get why anyone would put their little girl tramp-attire.

I like uniforms but not for the teasing factor...there are still differences. I went to a Catholic school for almost all of my education and wore uniforms throughout. There were kids who had pointed collars, butterfly collars, thin shirts, thick shirts, hand me down shirts, shirts that were thinner than others, skirts that had been hemmed and pinned so they'd last 3+ years, and skirts that were fitted, some had sweater vests embroidered with the school name, others had a polyester vest with brown buttons...and of course your shoes and purse are your "signature" pieces. The girl wearing the hemmed skirt, yellowed hand me down white blouse, white knit knee socks, Puma shoes, and a poly vest got picked on. Kids are just cruel, you can't get around it. Uniforms are nice from cost and preparation standpoints.

If the uniforms were PROVIDED and had no optional pieces, it might work better.

Did the nuns worry that the little boys might see your undies in the reflection of your mary janes? They did at mine.

Uniforms are just another mechanism for teaching that we are "all the same" when in reality this could not be further from the truth.

Uniforms each conformity and stifle individualism. Where are uniforms worn? The military. why? To promote team unity.

School uniforms are just another step toward deadening childrens' individuality, leading to adults that just "go with the flow" and don't speak up for themselves. In short, sheep.

But hey, they sure are convenient!

I wore one. Do I go with the flow? Anyway, not sure you can turn this into something ideological.

Baaaa !

Schools that allow the parents to "Get it Close" as far as the color or style of the stated uniform have problems.
The last Private School she went to gave you the OPTION of buying a stated style of shorts. Kids came in wearing Cargo pants and off colors etc...

Schools that require you to buy the uni from a supplier have few issues and I agree the Shoes and the age of the uniform are still
issues.

Older kids at her school are not allowed to wear Sneaks, so they will probably be picking on the kids wearing Shoe Barn brand dress shoes instead of Florsheims.

Hmmm we had to get our uniforms from one supplier. They changed to this half way through my schooling because they had too many problems with short skirts etc designer gear when the colour was all that was stipulated.

What I HAVE noticed, is that in countries where I attended school where there was no uniform, not only were designer clothing and shoes a big deal, but the accessories, like folders, pens, pencil cases etc all had to be designer too. No-one in my school in Ireland gave a shit what brand their folder etc was.

I agree that school is for studying and not for showing off fashion / wearing miniskirts to impress the guys... Kids can express themselves all they like at weekends....

here is the perspective from someone who sees this bullshit everyday
school uniforms would be great,i dress nice so nobody had ever bothered me nor have i said anything about anyone else, but it happens much more than it should, even if its not by words you can tell just by the people that hang out together, they keep the poor kid away because they feel it makes them look bad

and its horrible because ive met many nice people who may not have had the means to wear clothes like me but they were much better to me than the people wearing 150 dollar tommy jeans and that 200 dollar gucci shirt

so uniforms would be great but than it just goes into the whole thing of the less fortunate not being able to get street clothes and a uniform for their kids and i feel this would up the drop out rate

and the shoe thing here,we dont have a choice in catholic schools you wear dress shoes black or brown unless in gym class or wearing shorts then you wear dress sandels solid black or brown

Uniform requirements have no place in public schools. When I was in grade school while the Cold War still existed, we were always taught about those "evil" communists that required their school kids to wear uniforms.

Now it seems that people in the USA seem to like this communist idea.

We are homeschoolers so as long as my kids get out of their pjs I'm ok with it.

When I went to Catholic school we had the option of light blue polo shirt, or a light blue button up shirt with a tie. Then navy blue pants, black socks, and black shoes. The only days we got to wear shorts were gym days, once a week, and if the temperature was over 90 degrees.

My highschool changed to "dress code" my senior year. Consisted of khakies, and a collared shirt. It didn't change much. The weird kids were still weird, and bent the dress code rules w/o any retaliation. The preps were still preps, assholes still assholes, etc.

I don't have a problem with uniforms in Catholic school. You don't have[/]b to go to Catholic schools, so if you [parents] decide to send your kids their, then you conform to their dress regulations.

Public schools I don't like uniforms. The school district thought it would be a good idea for all of us to look alike. They can blow me. If I wanted to look like the others I would've dressed myself that way on my own.

The only times I wanted to look like other people was during hockey games, and when I decided to enlist in the Marines.

Da Comrade !

On my way to work, I'm always amazed at how parents let their Middle School Daughters dress for school.

I'm not talkin just skirts above the knee now...

Practically Daisy Duke shorts, bare Midriff or almost BraTops, T-shirts with sayings in them my wife would almost blush over...

or as raina said TRAMP-ATTIRE

Scarry !

Y-Lifter-- while out and about I'm always floored by the things that parents let their kids out of the house in. Maybe I just had really strict parents but I couldn't wear tummy shirts etc. Not even when I was 18. If I lived at their house, I followed their rules. Even now when I go over to visit I am careful about my choice of clothes (even though most of my clothing is office attire).

Swim suits had to be approved by dad til I moved out. lol I still feel weird wearing 2 piece swim suits at their house.

As for uniforms oppressing a child's sense of individuality-- most businesses have dress codes as well. That's just part of the real world. If I wore my club clothes to the office, I'd likely get fired.

I agree totally. I'm a huge freak, but I don't think it'll hurt kids if they don't see tight shirts and Daisy Dukes while they are in high school. As Rex said, uniforms won't change personalities, and they aren't a cure all as to why schools are screwed up, but it helps. It's one less distraction in school.

why don't we hinder kids ability to be individuals some more and shove a leash up there ass and implant a tracking device in them....THEY WILL CONFORM OR ELSE....

(on a side note i think that uniforms have no place in any school, it can cause more trouble then good)

Matt,

Sheep?

I can tell you this; my kid will be like her mother-She'll lead that damn flock! Ahhhh...recalling my memories of getting my knuckles rapped by Sister Mary as I type......

Yes, exactly.

We all need to fall in line behind our government, and give our full suport to inane propgrams like "Operation TIPS". After all, it seems perfectly reasonable that postal workers should be used to report "suspicious" activity, right? Sure, I want my tax dollars to go there...investigate me...while I pay for it. Awesome!!

Let's throw our weight behind this new set of criminal law that includes things like "making terroristic threats". Of course, we aren't rounding up Al-Qaeda with these laws, but Allen Iverson was charged with it. Hey, where was he on Septmeber 11th? Anyone know for sure?

Let's also sit back while the government re-examines the idea of using military for policing domestically. Hey, a litle team unity is what we need, right?

In my opinion, dressing our kids up the same as others is contradictory and counterproductive: contradictory to the indispuitable reality that we are all different, and counterporductive to the expanding of their perspectives.

Unity, indeed.

OK, so maybe the compromise for Public Schools would be for them to "Grow a Set" and enforce the stated dress codes already in place...

I find it hard to believe that anyone would see a Benefit in allowing their Teenage Daughter(or Son) to wear highly distracting clothes to a place not needing more distraction..

Or would it be too Conforming or Restrictive to ask them to wear clothes so as not to have their Ass crack showing, or letting the girls peek out ?

I dont have kids yet but I like the idea of uniform, more equal, no teasing, no fucked up with Ac/Dc shirt or Gothic dumbasses or Yo yo im emimem

Everyone the same

But I hate the schoolgirl uniform

Next to one of the campus I go once a while there a private HS and AYAYAYAYA!!!!!
Sorry but when I am on test and I see those 17-18yo in skirts!!!!!!!!

that should be at the parents discretion not the schools.

Yes but unfortunately there are Parents not present when the kids get dressed to leave because they are climbing that ladder to Career Success.

I don't argue that some things are best decided by the parents
for what is best for their kids.
And this thread was started as an open forum for both sides

The country lives by the Statements that you have the right to personal freedom as long as it does not infringe on my personal freedoms.

I'm just saying that Schools around the country are reporting some student's rights to an education are being infringed on by those ABUSING Their right to wear whatever they want to School...

I'll assume these uniforms would be for elementary and middle school. Personally, I would want my child to be able to wear whatever he wants up to a point, and plus, when I was in elementary and middle school I thought uniforms looked stupid. I never noticed a lot of people pickin on other people for clothes. Perhaps those that wore certain styles hung out together thats about it. In public high school I don't think that uniforms should be required. There is very little picking on other people because of clothes, unless you think they are unfairly secluded from certain things by being judged by their clothes. I hang out with poor people and rich people, who wear different clothes. Doesn't matter to me. Educate you kids to look for the person inside the clothes.

Thanks teen...

I think my main issues are the Lack of enforcement with what little dress codes there are in Middle and High School mainly.

TRAMP-WARE

My kid may have a poor, boring fashion sense..Butttttt..She'll be in one of Ohio's highest ranked private school's. The test scores of these little nerds amaze me.....(said with love)

She'll be dressed like a little geek...But..... I can assure you she WON'T answer a history test that the Boston Tea Party was held in Pearl Harbor....

PRIVATE MEANS WE EVEN HAVE TO PAY FOR BEING A ROTTEN PARENT!

I'm talking about unity towards the community or towards ones school, I'm talking about unity socially, at a person to person level, not at a state level. besides, private schools use uniforms and the indoctrination they provide doesn't really stick anyway. why should state run schools be any more effective. uniforms will add a one less thing for teachers, administrative staff, and students to worry about.

i agree, its convienient.

btw you can still judge a person by the WAY THEY WEAR IT; i grew up in catholic schools (me not being one) and all the uniforms required certain characteristics, tucked in shirts, tight pants, dress socks; girls had to wear their skirts "knee length" and so on.

All the popular kids wore their uniforms untucked and baggy, all the popular girls hiked their skirts untill you could see the crotch (almost), aswlel as wear black bras instead of white; i can go on forvever. And then there are those poor people who cant afford 5 sets of clean shirts and pants for the week; perhaps one day a lad forgets to iron his shirt. So many people were judged and ridiculed at my high school because of how they wore it.

As a basic rule, people that had un-tucked shirst never talked to people with firm fitting attire with their shirts tucked in.

although with uniforms they all look the same; teenagers are cruel, and unforgiving, no matter what the situation they will find a way to set barrier walls. Atleast with normal clothes you can make a statement about yourself...

again besides the fact that they were extrememly convenient, uniforms do more harm then good. imo

JM: You're on the money about how people wore the uniforms. If it wasn't for the fact that I was smart, and had some athletic ability none of the "cool" kids would've talked to me in grade school.

One of my highschool's sayings was "Good things happen when you wear green" that one of the preps on the morning announcements would always say. No, good things happen when you do your job, and do it right.

Then when the issues of school uniform arose the kids in favor of it would say "It won't distract people". How short can someone's attention span be to not be able to perform a task right by the way another dresses?

Private schools can do whatever they want because they ar fucking private. Parents (and implicitly, kids) accept the terms of attendance. And that is perfectly OK because a parent chooses what is best for the child which is what they are supposed to do anyway. Parents are involved in teh decision.

Government schools have no "choice" provision. They are provided by the state. As this coutnry goes forward, and the middle class disappears, government schools wil become the refuge of the poor (because basically, they suck) and getting those kids to conform wil be paramount to the continued existence of our country.

If the governemtn can pass off conformity in teh name of convenience, think how easy it will be when your neighborhood watch rep shows up asking you for a state mandated urine sample, telling you it is part of the "drug war".

Add another dimension to your thought process: time. Forget about what is convenient right now. where is this trend going?

That´s a big big leap.

That must mean the kids are learning... how to take standardized tests. Doesn´t mean anything else necessarily. A different discussion.

I went to a single-sex Catholic high school with a horrible uniform (wine colored sweater). At the time I thought it was the worst place in the world and even contemplated listening to a Smiths cd for a brief time, but I realize now it was a very stress free environment compared with the Lord of the Flies type of set-up a lot of my friends later described. There was certainly no emphasis on appearance, I can't relate at all to the scenarios people describe about checking their clothes before school.

American teenagers have no individuality anyway. There's like 5 or 6 personality templates that they have to conform to: Geek, Jock, Freak, all that bullshit. I really don't think it's that big a deal to standardize them a little bit more.

I've seen some kids completely void of common sense ace those tests, but I've also seen "smart" kids do well too. Frankly, I don't need the government telling me whether or not my kid is keeping up with the Jones's, or what his strengths and weaknesses are.

Naturally. But of course you realize the purpose of the tests has nothing to do with seeing if kids are learning.

Uniforms are a load of crap. It takes the emphasis off of cloths and onto looks. And still it's not a "you must buy this brand" uniform, you just need the right style. People still wear their own style. Hippys get baggy clothing, hot chicks get tight small clothing. And they dont regulate shoes so all the black people are buying 200 dollar shoes to look cool. Plus girls spend alot more time with their face since their cloth can't draw as much attention anymore.

It's a load of shit if you ask me, causes more trouble then it cures.

The rules at my school were strict and didn´t allow much for that variation. Also, girls couldn´t wear make up. And if you didn´t say your Hail Mary´s properly you were sent to father O´Briens office for a "hands on" repentance lesson. None of the girls ever had to go, however. Hmmm....

They watch TV and copy someones style anyway for the most part.
