pc wizards - a "lan" question

i am connected through a "lan" network via optimum online. i use a motorolla surfboard modem. i hit the power button on my surger protector tonight by accident and now my pc does not recognize the modem any longer. i also have a router that runs to my vonage digital phone service. that is also not being recognized.

I have this laptop and i am using the same motorolla surfboard modem and the lan network now. any ideas as to how i can get my pc to recognize it? kind of stuck here?!!

need more info?

thanx guys/gals

Dave

What operating system?
Was the modem connected directly to the pc or was the router in between?
Is there a switch/hub involved?

my oprating system is a dell 8200 (is that what you meant?)

the ethernet cable from my PC runs directly into the "netgear web safe router". this router has 4 ports on the right hand side and 1 main port on the left for a total of 5.

I have another ethernet cable that runs from the same router into the motorolla modem.

I have yet another ethernet cable that runs into the cisco analog telephone adapter for my vonage service.

does this make any sense to you? i am VERY new to this.

thank you for taking out the time to help.

What version of Windows is it? 2000? XP? 98?

windows xp

i restarted 5 diff't times. each time i disconnected the modem and the ethernet cable from the pc.

the 5th time i restarted i decided to leave the ethernet cables out and an icon in the bottom right of my screen said "missing LAN network"

does that help?

I am using the LAN network on this laptop right now.

It did say that the lan was connected when i did do that. when i attempted to conect to the internet i kept on recieving a dsn or dns error message.

Shut down the pc.
Remove the power from the modem and leave it off for 30 seconds.
Turn the modem back on.
When the lights stop doing whatever they on power up turn on the pc.

thanx guys

shut down the computer. disconnect all the cables. open the window. throw computer out of the window. no more dns errors

You need to to open a Command Prompt window and try to ping your dns server.

Click Start/Run then type "cmd" and press Enter.
This should open a black window. Type "ipconfig /all" and press Enter. You'll see several lines of number but one of them should be an entry for DNS Servers. There may be two servers listed. An IP address will look something like 123.123.123.123. When you get the dns server IP address type
"ping 123.123.123.123 using whatever the IP address really is. It should hopefully show you the response time, but it might time out and give an error.

open your network connections. what is that telling you? anything connected through your hub? can you see any of your other computers?

i am using the modem that i usually use for my PC on my laptop now.

am I supposed to reconnect it to the PC and try the "ipconfig" that way?

I am looking at my PC now. Laptop on my lap.

i restarted, hooked everything up where it originally was and tried the command prompt.

same result;

Windows IP Configuration

C: Documents and Settings\default

Same result what? What was the result of the ping?

this is what my blank black command prompt screen says exactly;

Microsoft Windows XP [version 5.1.2600]
<C> Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\default>ipconfig/all

Windows IP Configuration

C:\Documents and Settings\default> (insert blinking cursor)

It looks like your TCP/IP configuration is missing. I don't know if you're using dhcp or not. Open the Command Prompt again and type "ipconfig /renew".

i am doing this now

i typed in- ipconfig/all

it says

Windows IP Configuration

C:\Documents and Settings\default>

His machine is not even seeing his NIC card / IP config. Since all of his devices are not working it’s not a local PC problem.

Your setup is this?
Modem
Router
PC

I would assume that your modem is fine. That’s the demarc. I would think that the problem is with your router. I have had issues with my Linksys where all my PCs get booted off, usually when my wife is screwing around doing something stupid on her laptop.

If all of your PCs are not connecting, including your IP phone, then something is preventing it from getting an address from the router or finding its default gateway.

What I would do:

Shut down all PCs and devices that have an IP stack.
Shut down your cable modem of whatever device you have for service
Leave your router on

There should be a hard reset button somewhere on the router. Usually a tiny button that is flush with the unit so you can’t hit it by accident. You need to hold this down for about 15 seconds and you’ll see your router start to cold boot.

Give the router time to go through it bootup.

Turn on your cable modem or DSL. You should see the link light for the WAN come up and some activity on your router.

Turn on your main PC. Try to access anything on the web. Let’s say it still doesn’t work.

You may need to go into your control panel and shut down and start up your NIC card on the software level. This will usually initialize it and have it send a DHCP request to the router. Then when you type ipconfig /all you’ll see a shit load of address’s that you really don’t need to know what they are for.

Again, if your phone is also not working then you probably will not need to do this since the problem is most likely with the router.

You may want to bypass the router just to see if it works without it. At least you will narrow it down to the router as the culprit.

If the PC isn't seeing the NIC it's DEFINITELY a local pc problem. At the every least XP would have assigned an APIPA IP address (169.x.x.x) )if it couldn't contact a real DHCP server.

Thanx for the help guys.

I went and got a new motoralla modem.

The USB port does work and I am connected through that now. The ethernet port does not. It doesn not recognize the modem??????
Do I need a new ethernet card? I am using the PC and not my laptop now.

Once again, I appreciate all of the help gentleman.

Well, I might be kind of late, but if you are getting a DNS error, the problem is in all likelihood not in your PC.

TYhe DNS server is a computer out on the Internet that translates when you type www.elitefitness.com to an IP address (that 123.123.123.123 thingy) and then sends you to the www.elitefitness.com site.

Computers only recognize IP addresses - the DNS server is for us to remember names of websites, not numbers.

To get you (Dave) on to the Internet, your operating system (XP) interfaces with tthe Ethernet card ( also called a NIC = network interface card). The Ethernet card then connects to the modem, which connects to the router. The router is the gateway from your PC/modem etc to the Internet.

The router stores "routes" to get around the Internet to different sites. DNS servers are out on the Internet so if you are getting a DNS error, it is because your router can't get to the Internet.

I think the router is the problem, particualry if your IP phone is out as well.

IMO, pick up rtemple's post where he talks about rebooting the router and go from there.

I DO NOT miss being an IT person.

good luck sir.

No guys, trust me, it's the modem. The analog phone wouldn't run straight through the ethernet either ...

bro I just saw your PM yest night, why did you spend money to buy a new modem? It is probably some software problem where dns settings got reset improperly when the power was shut down. Is it working now? Sorry I was so late, tomorrow we'll figure it out

It's your NIC. Open Network places and view network connections. Right click Local area network and select enable.

When you did ipcionfig /all and got nothing, it means the PC see's no NIC.

It wasn't the settings bro, I went there personally.

I'll tell you what happened:

His cable modem has a way to use a USB port or ethernet cord to connect to it, if I put the USB it worked properly ... but the ethernet didn't.

The only reason he needs ethernet to work is cause his phone uses it too. The phone gets connected to router, as well as the ethernet cord from the pc, and the router than goes to the modem.

Now, when I use the phone directly to the modem, I get same shit ... the phone didn't work. Somehow, the ethernet connection within the modem got messed up, I am certain it was the problem. BTW, I took an extra cord with me and tried it, the ethernet cord wasn't the problem either.

So did you get it to work through Usb? He bought new modem and it still doesnt work?

It worked through the USB.

I don't know if the new modem works or not (it should though), I wasn't there when he brought it. Think he got it, or will get it, for free from cable company.

I got the modem for free thank goodness.

Looking forward to seeing your bro's tomorrow.

:)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will try everything posted.

Does your ethernet connection work through your new modem?
If not make sure your NIC is not disabled via my previous post.

Good Luck

Thanx man.

My ethernet connection does NOT work. I did exactly as you advised. The network says that it is enabled?.............

Is there a monkey in my PC?...............

Maybe your tcp/ip stack got corrupted. In XP there is an option to repair it I think on the last tab of the properties of your NIC.

I think this beacuse you said your NIC is enabled and you do not get any output from ipconfig at all.

Check this again:
If your NIC is enabled, when you right click it and hit properties it should say Disabled.
