R.I.P. Joe Pa...history will not be kind to him...it is a shame.
Which is a joke. He is the epitome of college football. I am a Buckeye fan and hate Penn State, however, not to give Joe Pa his props is absurd. The Penn State Administration are a bunch of scumbags, they should have let him take a triumphant exit because he put that school on the map instead they hung him out to dry because they are so worried about "image." I have this appalling feeling he was not the only one in a high place who knew what was going on for years, yet they use him as a scapegoat.
So anybody who's well known who's done anything good in their life doesn't deserve to be responsible for things they've done wrong? He was an awesome coach who did awesome things for that program, but that doesn't really excuse anything. Do you think celebrities don't deserve to go to jail, too?
Do I think he deserves to be remembered solely for that scandal? No, not at all. That's a small blip on a radar full of positive life accomplishments that deserve to be remembered as well, but would I go so far as to say he deserved a "triumphant exit"? No. Don't be ridiculous.
My understanding is that the eye witness reported what he saw to Paterno. Paterno then notified his superiors (possible without all the details) and his superiors dropped the ball.
What exactly did Joe do that was so shameful? The eye witness himself didn't go to police. Didn't he bear more responsibility than Jo Pa?

What did he do that was shameful, are you kidding. He had a coach on his staff molesting kids and he didn't fire him and allowed it to carry on. I know he's a great coach, but it's hard to respect a guy that is ok with this going on under his leadership. I know he told his superiors, but he could have made a stop to this.
They eye witness and his superiors deserve as much blame as he does. I'm not saying he deserves all the blame nor did he deserve to be the only one punished, it was pathetic that he was.
Notifying someone is great and all, but in my moral opinion, I think he, the eye witness and his superiors all had a duty to continue to follow up on the situation until something was done about it.
Not everyone's moral compass points in the same direction, though, and I understand that. If you think telling someone once and thinking your duty ends there even if that means a wrong was not righted, then what works for you, works for you.
I'm saying the eye witness knew for sure what he saw. Jo Pa just had an accusation by one person and a denial by another. The athletic department presumably investigated and took no action.
If I were in that situation I'd want to be reasonably sure before I wrecked someone's life. The eye witness had the certainty and I say it was his responsibility to go to police when no action was taken.
i'm with you...but joe pa spent so much time in one place, with a very narrow focus (the program and the university) and he was sheltered from so many things that went on below and around him that, i honestly believe that his perception of reality was somewhat skewed (especially at his advanced age)...he was allowed to continue to live in that "golden age" of college athletics, where shit like that just didn't happen...or if it did, no one talked about it...i realize that there have always been child-molesters out there, for as long as there have been children...but, things were different back in the day when paterno took the reins and, he never really changed/evolved much over all those years...for better or worse, that is a fact...and, all of the good things that paterno did over those years (too many good things to even begin to count)?? most of that shit was wiped away and history will not give him the credit that he deserves...that is also a fact.
