Pain in the upper arm...

New member
Ok, when doing hammer curls, my left arm starts hurting just about where the side delt connects into the upper arm.

My routine is typically:
Standing Military presses 1 warmup and 3 working
Heavy upright rows 3 heavy sets
Rear delts pulls 3 sets
Incline skull crushers 4 sets
Cable over head tri extensions 3 sets
Seated over head tri extension 3 sets
Barbell curl 3 sets
Preacher curls 3 sets
Incline bench isolation hammer curls. *PAIN STARTS HERE*

Sounds like biceps tendonitis to me...good call rice. The biceps tendon runs up the arm through the bicipital groove (common site for inflammation, which is right where you're describing the pain), then it attaches to the supraglenoid tubercle above the glenoid fossa.

Just let it rest...

after taking basic anatomy, i can finally understand wtf you are talking about bulldog :p

LOL...just wait till you take gross anatomy. You'll get to see all this shit up close and personal...Fun stuff!

Crap, now I have to get out my anatomy book to figure out what you're talking about...

So, the connection of the medial head of the shoulder has pain if one has this?

Not sure what you're asking. Connection of the medial head of the shoulder? Basically, you'll have pain right where you described. I just did a search and found a good link that describes it...check this out:

K for your response and link. Now if the damn thing only had pictures for me to visualize what the hell they're talking about.

Kinda basic...but this should give you a little more insight into what's going on.

Ok, then maybe I'm not describing this correctly, or the image is way off. If you take your finger and slide it down the medial head of your delt to where id comes into the indentation in your arm, midway down. THAT is where I feel the pain...

Not writing a thesis...thank god. I graduate in May though...which is kinda good. I don't know where I'm gonna go from there...probably go on to get my doctorate...so at least I can call myself a doctor.

So you already took gross anat.? Did you dissect the cadaver? That was cool shit huh?

Ok, I just finished looking at my "Strength Training Anatomy" book. The pain is right where the middle head of the delt attaches to the Brachialis. I suppose since the hammer curl is supposed to emphasize the brachialis it's time for me to give that a rest for while...

The delt doesn't attach to the brachialis...it attaches to the humerus (at the deltoid tuberosity). The brachialis isn't even in that area...the brachialis orginates right above the elbow (above the elbow, below the middle of the humerus) and inserts just below the elbow.

I'm tellin ya bro...it's the biceps tendon.

I see my doctor later this week. I hope it doesn't take me down for too damn long. :( Although, it's just the hammer curls that do it to me... I can skip those for a while...

Might just be a muscle strain...either in the bicep or delt. But like I said, I'd guess biceps tendonitis.

Good luck either way...let me know what the verdict is...I'm one for one on diagnoses this week. :)
