packaged or fresh chicken

Was just wondering if their a difference.
I usually just go to walmart and buy the uncooked chicken breast in the bag for like $6, the thighs are also good and cheep.
But then you also have the chicken in the poultry section which i guess fresher and looks better than the squashed ones in the bag.

They both taste good, i cook them normally on the foreman, is one better than the other nutritional wise,or the same. the ones in bag cheaper though, which ones to go with?

Buy fresh chicken. Most of the frozen chicken is shot full of sodium and preservatives. You should be able to taste the difference.

A lot of producers inject fresh chicken with a broth mixture to make the chicken more moist. That broth is full of sodium. There was a recent news article highlighting it.

Seen the same over in the UK too, alot of stuff is filled with brine and/or water. It preserves it on the shelf with that 'fresh' look and - more importantly - adds weight which means it costs more.

Easiest way to tell, does it shrink when cooked. I'm currently buying frozen due to finances but once that's sorted I buy from a butcher.

Frozen and from the bag is cheapest, but it has quite a few preservatives in it and also they tend to be more smaller pieces.

I typically buy the small packs of Tyson, they have a net weight of 1.45lbs. I find the packs with only 3 pieces of them and I find they seem a bit more fresh then the Kroger or Wal Mart frozen brand. The frozen brands also seem to be quite a bit thinner on top of being smaller, so if you are trying to get almost 8ounces into your meals with chicken, it would probably only last as long as the way I do it.

If you just want like 3-4 ounces of chicken, the frozen bags would probably be better.
