It seems like when I was growing up, steroids were swept under a rug and were not supposed to be spoken about. Only those who had decided to switch over to the dark side knew anything about it. The rest of us were left with over-exaggerated myths about the potential side effects.

Well, I have recently been working with a 5th grade class for the past 2 months as part of my requirment to finish out my schooling. I have the opportunity to sit down with them at lunch and really get to talk to them on a more personal basis. Well, the first day I was there, 2 students came up to me at seperate times and asked if I took steroids. I laughed off the idea of that and changed the subject. A few days later at lunch, they were talking about steroids and who uses them. They then turned to me and asked how do people get steroids?

Has the media created a new curiousity in our youth about steroids in their attempt to scare them away? You can't flip ESPN on without hearing about Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi and Balco Labs. A new steroid story hits almost daily. All the advertisements to tell children about the negative effects of steroids, are they working?

In my personal opinion, kids know more about steroids today than most on this board do. I'm talking about 5th graders actually taking time out of their day to think about steroids and how do people get them. Its sad and scary at the same time. Maybe all this media hype will lead to a future generation who is more aware and understanding about the subject.

I'd like to hear some others opinions.

Media manipulates everything whenever and however they want. They only look for the opportunity to make money. Of course there are a lot of side effects from all these steroid advertisement; of course children know more about steroid today than ever before; but is the media worried about this? NO because this doesn't make money.

Thanks for responding. K to you. Its sad that the media doesn't realize or care what impact they really have on our children.

They know a lot, but a lot of bullshit. they know what the media tells them and what the insane amount of pseudoscience pushed at them. so i wouldnt say they know, i'd just say, the fact that they (gear) is passed off as sooooo bad, they are just intrigued by them.

I like your comments, but is having 10 and 11 year olds intrigued about steroids a good thing?

Honestly bro, i'd have to say it depends on the kid and the people around that kid. i was pretty intrigued by gear from 12 till now. and i turned out just fine (i think, lol). but at the skool where im a teacher assistant, i get a bunch of kids coming up to me asking the same questions u mentioned. and they seem to be fascinated with the strength that roids give u. so they ask me "do you just fuck ppl up in fights" i laugh and say i dont fight and they either say "why? you can clean house" or they say "but what if u did?". LOL i just laugh and tell them not to fight.but had it been someone else in my shoes and said, "ye steroids make u a machiene, you'll fuck ppl up easily". then i think thats problematic. i dont want to sound pescimistic but i think that the media will always twist shit and misinform ppl. so its the parents and authorities that have to properly educate the kids.

They will be aware but not in a truly informed sense. More in a sense that they can achieva a goal faster or better...without educating themselves...youth = impatience.

When The media constantly preaches about steroids, Day in and day out, the kids hear the parts that they want to hear...such as "Performance enhancing Drugs", then they hear about who broke what kind of record while using performance enhancing drugs and the curiousity is peeked. That makes the kid ask questions and want to try it...same as Sex education...
When the school sent a note home for my 4th grade daughter, asking if I would give permission for her to attend a "Sex education class" I wrote on the Note..."HELL NO!"

Why would anyone want to teach a 4th grader about sex??? It just peeks the curiousity and makes them want to try it...same as drugs!
Just MHO!

last friday this kid came up to me and started telling me that a guy he knows (i know too, hes a year older than me), is taking juice. i asked what, he said "Minstrol". i chuckled. but the guy hes talking about is a fat shit that barely lifts and doesnt know shit about training. as a matter of fact i remember a few years back he was eating, no joke, eating transdermal pro-horms. thats more troubling to me than anything.

Thats sad bro. Haha. Stay away from that guy. I just found it weird that kids were actually asking me if I took steroids. HAha. They were calling me some wrestlers name from the WWE. I can't remember it because I don't watch that crap. But they associate steroids with all those guys.

I knew all about steroids and we all wanted them in HS. We couldn't find them but we wanted them. That was 1973. So no, kids don't want steroids now any more than they did in steroids infancy. We wanted them because the body builders had them. It didn't matter that the baseball and football players hadn't sunk their teeth into them yet. The idea the a pill or drug could fill your arms and chest with muscle was all we need to hear. And I think that's the lure, not the pro-athletes.

As time goes on kids become more informed with issues in the news. When espn and congress is slamming down on professional athletes publicly for using AS then the kids will of course wonder what is going on. When I was 12 years old I didn't have much of an idea as to what they were. By the time I was 18 I thought I knew it all.

At 23 now, I realize that I don't know shit... We need to better control what is on television (news, movies, shows). By doing this the children won't have as much of an opportunity to pre-maturely research into something they have no business knowing about.

Yeah. i agree. but I see a big difference between high school kids knowing about steroids than 4th and 5th graders knowing about them.

4 and 5th graders know more about rec drugs too then they didn't used to. It's just easier for them to gain access to that kind of knowledge. My point was that it's not the athletes. Because ESPN doesn't report on rec drugs in the kind of detail my 10 year old knew before I was even aware he was up on them.

It kind of worries me that we are even having that conversation. I just have to sit here and think in 3 years when my fiance and I are married and getting ready to have kids. Rec drugs are becoming less of a big deal to everyone. I had to take a drug test for a new job I am about to go on. Before I wasted my prospective boss's time I explained that I would probably be taking not so legal "supplements" in the near future. And that I have also smoked pot in the last few weeks.

Her response was this: "It doens't really matter what you have in your system, or what you will have in your system. We will hire you anyway with the impression that you will "stop" what you are doing." She then explained that they don't retest anyone regarding any circumstance.

This worries me...

Wow. Its a popular culture theme. Its gaining more acceptance. K to you bro.

hey as a teen my self im a junior in high school and i have researched them for about 8 months now... i know that everyone at my HS knows about them and how to get them and all want to take them... they have no idea what they do negatively or anything about diet, PCT, gettin ur BF down and how much u can gain with out them.. they ask me to set them up a cycle and have no knowledge about them other that they get u big..when if u dont eat right or sleep or train u will gain nothing... i think the youth now a days knows about them but they do not understand what they do and the different types.. its scary some kids will inject stuff and they dont k now what it is called they just do 1cc a night and ask me if it is good or what they should do.. in my opinion we know more about them but we dont know how to use them properly in order to benefit from them... im 17 by the way and ya ive thought about doing them and even have a cycle set up and PCT..so i hope that answers ur question

Thanks for your response. I'm glad that you have taken time to research AAS without just sticking them into you and that you are helping others. I really wish you didn't start so young, but you are going to be a man soon and must make your own decisions. High school kids really have no idea what side effects can occur if you don't do this right. k to you bro.

children are asking other children. how much worse does it get. thats like an addicted gambler asking an alcoholic if he had a drink today, and what it did to his liver.

kmoe tell your friends to leave the shit alone. You guys aren't done growing yet, it can cause chemical imbalances in people so young. You may end up in a position where you have to get HRT because you threw off your test levels so early.

Good Luck

trust me i try to tell them if they goin to do them research them and find out wut they can do to you.. they think the only side u can get is gyno...i also tell them they can gain so much more naturally and just by a good diet 4000-5000 cals and they dont understand tho... plus it does not help when they accuse me of takin them cuz im 6 3 and 210 lbs and am signing with a D1 f ball team(texas tech baby):) ... i think because i live in texas it is a lil different too because down here football is everything and guys will do ANYTHING to help them out in football and get them a scholarship.. this is all just in my opinion and i know i dont know much about AAS but i will give advice when the person asking is clueless about them.. so ya it is kids asking kids i guess... o and i am not takin them either i am holding off till bout 25 or 26 when my nat test level goes down a bit.. sorry for writing so much to i was just giving my opinion being a 17 yr old and all

It's an effect of the media pandering to joe-6pack and his need to feel better about his worthless fat ass by believing that the athletes who dedicated their lives to their games only got there cause they were poppin them there steeroid pills

now more people than ever really believe juice is a magic cure-all that will make them elite athletes, give them 50lbs of lean muscle in a week and get allllllll the bitches in cancun. And they spread this bullshit to their kids, as do the 'educators' / scare mongerors

fuckin assholes.

Scary, huh? I think it all comes down to that Balco lab scandal.

The more play in media with the superstar athletes the more who will do them despite the risks or personal knowledge of what there doing. They see Barry crushing the ball, getting paid millions, and living a dream life and they, no matter what the risks involved dream of being that guy. It's kind of sad and also disapointing, but the way it is. Not sure where or if even true, but some where a while back I was that reading places where drugs are legal have less of an abuse rate then where they are banned. The make them less of a cool or rebelious thing. Hopefully the whole scandal bullshit will blow over soon and those who do use will stop being exploted as cheaters / dishonorable people.

thank you dilznek people who dont know about steroids think it is the easy way out and is for lazy people who liek shortcuts... in reality u have to bust ur ass, eat more, sleep more, and train harder than when you are not takin them because if u dont then u will hurt ur self using them... i just wish people didnt have this thought that u take roids do a few curls then BAM ur arnold or coleman(maybe just arnold..not many people outside of BB know who coleman is lol) media gives u this terrible perceptive about steroids and people who are caught using them
