Oregon Law Would Jail Protestors As Terrorists

Hey... I dislike protesters as much as the next guy who gets stuck in traffic for 2 hours because they are blocking the street... and when you honk your horn at them, they break your windows, headlights and try to gash your tires...

But 25 years... LOL... I think they are trying to send a message of intolerance. Any kind of anti-war talk during World War II could get you the death sentence... if some one accused you of being a communist... it was really really bad.

I think protestors should have thier right to protest... however, it should be restricted to a certain time, place and manner... as guidelined by the Constitution. Meaning, if they divert off of the place they are allowed to protest... onto a street... they can be prosectuted for this... perhaps more strict penalties should be introduced... but when a rapist gets 10-15 years... I dont' see a point in 25 years... perhaps 6 months... but still.

In MN they've been talking about charging the protesters the cost of having all sorts of cops out at the protests. Fining them is reasonable but 25 years seems utterly silly.

That sounds like the best idea yet. It costs Portland about 400K per day of protest. I would love for those shits to have a lien placed on their starbucks paycheck for the rest of their life.

Dubbed Senate Bill 742, it identifies a terrorist as a person who "plans or participates in an act that is intended, by at least one of its participants, to disrupt" business, transportation, schools, government, or free assembly.

That sounds as if there is a group of protestors and one of them stops a car the whole group gets arrested and might be punished as if they gang raped some passengers.
This is so wrong on every level.
Probably it´s just some attempt of some politician to look like some tough guy with proposing this ridicolous law aimed at an unpopular group.
Laws like that are more fitting for some facist country and not for a democracy.

It's really difficult to take any of your posts seriously when my eyes keep diverting to your avatar, but yeah, the penalty is a bit silly. I think they're going to make it less harsh. It's going to be something a lot of people are not willing to risk though. And I think alot of cities are implementing the tactic of charging the protesters for having the cops sent to the rallies. I hope those hippies could pay for it.

Ariolanine, accusing Matt of communism is just stupid.
Using that kind of ad hominem arguments is a bit late, Mc Carthy and the cold war are history.

I agree. But when 1,000 people break a jaywalking law at the same time, you now need a new law to deal with them.
Maybe the fear of going to jail will stop them from doing that.

Right. Just like it does in Iraq. Jailing those who disagree. Brilliant. Gopd bless America.

I am not advocating a 25 year sentence though. There is a huge difference between waving a sign and comitting sedition. People hear blocked entire highways and bridges.

Hey - a ray of common sense.

They then attacked people sitting in their vehicles, they burned flags, they attacked police, etc.. Why can't you understand that there needs to be a special law to deal with this behavior?

Assault isn't reasonable? if they aren't charged with it, then it isn't their fault, is it? Burning the flag is first amendment protected. I'm a disabled veteran and I support permission to burn the flag.

People like me? You mean people that respect the rights of others, people that respect law and order? Yeah there are a lot us. Unfortunately for you, people like me will ALWAYS be the majority, because anarchists like you taking over will mean that America is dead. These people aren't protesting, they are RIOTING!!

There are plenty of laws to deal with rioting. America is already dead. It;s just a corporation now. Wake up!

I've read plenty of history. Unlike you I didn't limit myself to Karl Marx.

The ignorance of that statement is so telling. You told me all I need to know about your background and biases. Thanks. What do you have a weak undergrad education? Dropped out? Middle class job that you hate?

Anyway,

The member of the socialist group that seized power and created the communist type system on top of Marx's socialism was Lenin.

Marx was Jew who longed to be a successful attorney but couldn't, so he shunned his Jewish beliefs in public, maintaining them in private. Trotsky was also a Jew.

Communism is antithetical to Jews - they invented deomcracy (yes that's where the Greeks got it, but a history reader like you probably knew that). Marx's original socialism was designed to actually give the resources to the people to democratically divide. So what you think Marx is espousing, (soviet style communism) he never said a word of.

It was Lenin that seized power and with it, apportioned resources to the state to control. Hence Soviet Communism.

HAHA... man... this post turned into alot of idiot statements. :)

I think putting people in prison for demonstrating is pretty stupid. Sure... I think that if it gets out of hand, property is damaged (like on the LSD when people were driving home from work)... then I think there should be some shit done to these people... but just like any other assclown that breaks the law.

First amendment rights can be limited by time, place and manner restrictions... as long as those restrictions are narrowly tailored to meet a compelling state interest... and those restrictions are not unconstitutionally vauge or overbroad... to include more speech, conduct, etc than necessary to achieve the ends.

If Bob, Harry and his 30 cousins want to stand on North Avenue and march up and down... that's cool. I respect that. If 2,000 muther fuckers want to take the street... and disrupt the lives of others... who may or may not support them... well... then something needs to be done. Especially as this "involvement" in the Middle East gets more and more escalated... so will the demonstrations... 2Thick mentioned a slippery slope... or the old "floodgates" argument... it works both ways.

I'm not saying throw people in prison for 25 years... because they protest, they are linked to terrorism? I'd say 90% of the protestors have other agendas than just a disagreement with the war... and I'd bet my 2K in the bank account it has nothing to do with terrorism.
