I also heard it was extremely realistic from a few war vets. Both Saving Private Ryan and a few episodes of Band of Brothers made me tear up. For all you WWII people, check out the book D-Day; I read it after seeing Saving Private Ryan and it solidified my belief that SPR was pretty much a re-enactment of D-Day. If you only knew how many devices, guns, mines, troops, bunkers, mortars and explosives were set on the beaches to prevent the Allied invasion, you wouldn't question the gore in SPR's opening scene.
