You really should try to identify it"browse goggle on snakes in your area"And if it is harmless at least you will know.As far as going out at night,you are fine.Snakes need heat,they dont like the chill of the night.Now if you were over here at my place,now that it's getting cold out at night,all the big spiders are trying to move indoors.I kill 2 or 3 silver dollar size one's every night.Now im not affraid of them,but i have 2 kid's that are.Hence the reason i kill them.But really they do a great job of keeping the insect's down.

I found a copperhead behind my house this weekend. I was digging through a rock pile, trying to build a small rock fence in my backyard and found him under a stone.

Funny part is, that didn't bother me nearly as much as the little mouse that shot out from underneath a rock. I was high steppin' it out of that rock pile I was wearing sandles and I guess I'm lucky I didn't drop that stone on my damn foot while I was running from saftey from that little rodent.
