A film that is designed to go to theatre, but goes STV - there is a reason.
Ex: Starship Troopers 2, Cruel Intentions 3, Van Wilder 2 usually the trademarks are bought cheap because all studios have passed on it. And then new producers pump out a sequel just to make a quick buck, and capitalize on the name.
Think about it. You want to make a horror film. You want to put your money into writing a brand new one, and get no press or interest -- or buy a franchise for pennies on the dollar, and get extra press and sales (eg: this thread!)

Man you can be THICK!
You are (yet again) NOT saying anything that has not been said before, or for that matter, not common knowledge. You have however, managed to (yet again) miss the point...
NOBODY (especially me) is questioning WHY a film goes STV.
However, just because a movie goes STV, does NOT mean it is NOT at least
watchable BECAUSE it has gone STV.
I didn't say all STV movies are good, I am not wondering why STV movies get made, ya follow so far?
I KNEW about this film before I watched it, AND I know why it went STV, It's more than OBVIOUS my
expectations were not "high" by the thread title "felt obligated", but I did expect to be midly entertained (even by a bad flick.).....
My actual point is, I EXPECTED a "less than", but watchable movie. However, what I did NOT expect, was to see what I had mentioned earlier, basically, the total annihilation of a classic to this degree.
Is it dumbed down enough for ya now?
Geez, how many times do you have to run up your own ass before you decide to finally get the hell out of you're own way?!?!?
