OK, let's talk about women's office fashion.

I am noticing a disturbing trend lately.

First of all the chicks are all wearing those Steve Madden kind of shoes, you know the ones that look like they are trying to look like bowling shoes, soccer shoes, and dress shoes all at once? I even saw a clog pair of those yesterday. UGH!

Second of all most of the young ladies here are wearing these slacks that look like men's dress pants. Some are even pin striped. But the aesthetic is that you can wear these with anything, like the abovementioned shoes and a pink sweater, for example.

Finally a the tops are also emulating mens wear in that the often wear these tops that are made to look like mens dress shirts.

So to recap the trend in my office is hideous shoes, men's dress pants, and sweaters or men's dress shirts.

What is this weirdness? Is this only in DC?

Economy is bad. Ann Taylor has replaced Saks as the place to shop.

Or not.

I long for the days working in Alexandria, Va and my daily trips to the Pentagon where there were all of those federal employees. I saw a lot of nice female bodies in nice dresses.

These days I am surrounded by men in BDUs. I prefer the duty in BDUs, but I sure as hell miss the scenery.

I believe the thing with office wear is that for the most part, it's like a seperate society outside of life. people spend 8-10 hours a day there..It's got their own social ladder and everything..and you will have the ladies who want to dress like professional shit so they look like the current day's posterchild for the model officeworker so they feel they will get respect and promotions, sans any sense of good style. Then you have the office sluts who dress professionally sexy and hope to make it by that route. I like them office sluts.

I live in skirts.

Long, short, flared, a-line, tight, straight, front slit, back slit, no slit variety.

Mules, clogs and thongs in summer.

Boots, mules and clogs in winter.

I LOVE THEM CHUNKY ASS SHOES

Thank God for women like you. :)

yeah we don't have office sluts here but we do have a 'stache or two.

velvett: you have touched on another topic that perplexes me: why do women, especially attractive ones, wear such clunky shoes? they are so f'ing ugly, they turn me off.

really pointed shoes look really dumb too.

what gives?

Our office went thru a period where all the women tried to look professional by wearing men's clothing knock offs.
Blazers, pin stripe suits, white button down shirts. But then try to make it women's wear by replacing the tie with a scarf. They thought it was "dress for success".
Lately they're going back to dresses, skirts seperates, more feminine style, less like "men in a skirt".

It's the guys here I wish would upgrade what their wearing.
Way too many wash & wear perma-wrinkle stuff that didn't fit they day they bought it.
And shorts in February?

I bought my first pair of black steel toe - seven hole combat boots in 91' and I've been addicted to chunky shoes since.

Back then they were not popular and I was a freak but hey I thought they were cool. I still have them in a closet somewhere but they are simly unwearable.

WHY?

I can't speak for anyone but me; it's never been about fashion it's always been about what I thought was cool and the most important reason - they're crazy comfortable and I'm all about comfort.

Hell my boots are even by Sketchers - they wear like sneakers and have a (wait lemme check) 4" heel.

:)

Black clunkers are fucking hot on a woman....as are long, black fitted skirts with a long slit, bright colored turtle necks and having the hair put up - preferrably with chop sticks.......GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Word to my cornhole brutha on the hair up with chopsticks. That is stupid hot. Plus she'll be able to do that cool let her hair down thing like on Revlon commercials.

I love those chunky shoes! I have a pair of Steve Madden boots that I adore. :) FOr me, part of it is a height issue. I love shoes that have a 3 inch heel or maybe a bit more. I'm 5'4, so I like that extra height sometimes. Plus, like Velvett, I'm addicted to the things. As far as clothing goes, I love skirts, but I'll wear pants most of the time just because when I go to work, I'm usually coming from class or meetings or just who knows what. I'm getting run ragged lately so pants are much easier to deal with. I don't think it's a matter of trying to look like a man. It's just comfy.

ok I'M NOT TAKING ISSue with the fact women wear pants. pants can be hot on a woman.

it's more the herd mentality of everyone conforming with each other.

as far as the clunky shoes, it's just suuuuuuuuuuuch a turn off. I mean if I see a woman with clunky shoes that is also hot, the first thing I think is, if I end up dating her, can I convince her to lose the shoes?

same goes for those hideously pointed shoes. I have seen some SMOKING babes waring these fucking sharpened needles of shoes, and I'm just like, WTF? are they trying to look like the court jester or something? i mean, that is soooooooo 1552 or something.

I guess it's about expressing your individuality or some statement like "I am so hot and/or cool that I can wear hideous shoes and STILL pull the guys" but it just don't work for me.

Turtkenecks, yes. Chop sticks, yes. skirts, yes.

Long skirts don't usually do it for me. But they're not a deal breaker the way the shoes are.

While I'm on my rant what is up with the whole "fuck me boots" phenomenon as well? They look like they just got out of a Nazi parade or a long ride. I mean miles of leather over a woman's lower legs just don't say "do me" to me.

The whole long skirt and high leather boots thing is out for me as well.

Ok since I am being so negative I will say what i DO like.

Short skirts. sweaters. regular tennis shoes and the athletic look is always hot. evening dresses are nice. light makeup but nor caked on. pants are cool, especially when they are tight. jeans are cool.

alright let's hear your answers velvett.

ok i just wanted to add one thing, girls that are dressed down in sweats for the weekend or at home at night are hot.

and when they roll down the tops of their pants, exposing a little extra below-navel real estate, that's hot too.

ok continue.

JC

Natty, if you get a kilt, you have to post it! Legs are hot! Do you want a modern sissy pleated kilt or an older great kilt?

But you have to tuck that little dirk into your socks, too.

I hate the clunky styles, but then I lived through it the first time. :p

The Bonnie Prince Charlie version is the one you see a lot of: short, pleated, velvet jacket, furry sporran.

A great kilt is several yards of fabric. It's not sewn. You pleat it on each time and secure it with a belt. It has a long tail that generally is thrown up over a shoulder and held on with a brooch. Very cool. Think Mel Gibson and Braveheart.

Either way, they show some leg. I'm all for men in skirts. :D

I agree that many women's office fashions are mediocre at best, but thank your lucky stars these aren't the 80's. That was when women had to wear those horrible miniature versions of men's suits, cut in the most unflattering style of ugly fabric, usually with a little ribbon or boutonniere at the neck. Nobody looked good in these. Today's fashions offer more leeway, but that can be bad thing for some, I guess.

I for one like a slightly clunkier heel because they give me better balance. I can wear a much higher heel that way. I feel like I'm going to twist my ankle wearing skinny heels.

I wear skirts (all kinds), sweaters, dress pants but I don't know about them being masculine. Mine are very feminine. Everything I wear is form fitting - I'm just comfortable that way. I usually wear sneakers on the train b/c of the amount of walking I have to do to the office & of course, I change into my heels here at work. I love heels - long & thin in the front. Once in a while I wear comfortable dress shoes but I don't dare sacrifice looking like an idiot! I like to portray an image that's classy & sophisticated in the office. Friday's are CASUAL! On those days - anything goes!

At my work every day is casual Friday! My job is mostly inside sales so if I am not going to see a customer I am not going to dress up for work. Today I have a velour track suit on. I am comfortable as hell! :qt:

I hear ya! Here it's business casual & casual. I do the same thing on Friday's girl, believe me! But I work w/ the CEO so I have to project an image since I'm his "counterpart"...plus it feels nice to play dress up for work. But on days when he's not in the office & I don't have much interaction w/ people coming in from the NY office etc., then anything goes! Velour suits etc! :qt: I think they're comfy & cute!

I'm in advertising....I think our clients expect us to be a little more casual

although my pinstripe suit is pimp! the grey, black, blue suits are for pitching prospective clients

and i own 2 pairs of maddens.....very comfortable

most of my female clients/co-workers are a bit older than I, and seem to have not gone shopping in years,
