hey everyone i was wondering if you guys could post all your oatmeal recipes you had...i'm going to the store soon to get some oats and i was just gonna pick up some quaker oats n some no-name brand probably...

also...when i cook it (should i even cook it?) do i heat it? or will that ruin alot of nutrients?

and does anyone know any decent tasting oats i can buy from a local market? i don't want another staple to add to my diet that tastes horrid :worried:

thanks in advance :raina:

i usually just take oatmeal and peanut butter and some vanilla ice cream and blend it together...maybe add some protein shake in there. that is all you need to bulk and hmmmm it tastes good :chomp: :Chef:

You ever tried steel cut oats? They require slightly different treatment. I'll lightly brown them in a dry pan gives a different flavor, more grainy, if that makes sense?

Anyway, if you don't know what to do with them, the lazy method I use: 4 c. water to 1 c. oats. Bring water to boil, add oats, bring that back up to an boil (note, here, if you're browning them in a dry pan first be careful, if you just dump the hot oats to the hot water the water will boil over; better to turn the water off and add the oats really slowly, a spoon at a time). Anyway, boil them for a couple more minutes, then slap the lid on the pan and leave that pan sitting overnight.

The next morning you have a big ol' pot of concrete :) No, seriously, you just dip one cup or whatever you want out of what's in the pot, add more liquid, heat that through, put the rest in the fridge. It's hearty, a change of pace.

I'm the kind of guy who gets impatient waiting for the microwave. I think I owuld have an aneurysm waiting for that.

I buy the Quaker Oats - not the Quick or Instant type but the original that come in the big round container. I put my dry portion in a bowl, add 2 packets of Splenda + cinnamon + water to cover & microwave for 1 minute - and they are done!

Now if you want to jazz it up & can afford the "extras" I also like:

Raisins + cinnamon
Chopped apple + raisins + minced walnuts + cinnamon
Dried cherries, cranberries or blueberries
Applesauce

Put the dried fruit or apple in with the dry oats, then add the water then microwave to soften up the fruit. I also like to add 1 tblsp. cream or coffee creamer after cooking.

I can't stand the texture of the quick oats as a cereal, they work for blender drinks, I guess. I ran out of both the oatmeal I normally use (it's called scottish porridge) and the steel cut kind and had a carton of the quick oats so I figured oats is oats ... ... tasted like the way kindergarten paste looks like it would taste.

To each his own.

The kind that is 2lbs? Yeah, I use to get those but I went through them so fast. Almost 2 of those per week so now I just go to costco every other week and buy the 9lb boxes.

Well, yes, but I get mine @ Costco too unless they are on sale for $1 then I stock up on them........

I jsut put 'em in a bowl like cereal and use some skim milk. One packet of splenda and it's good to go. Not gourmet or anything but not offensive either. Also, oatmeal works great blended into a shake.

ok this is an EXTREMELY stupid question...but when you blend the oats into a shake...do you make the oatmeal n wet them and heat them up and do that whole process and THEN grind them? or do you just put the oats, some P. powder, and water into the blender and blend them together that way? and isn't the oatmeal chunky in a shake? or does it shred apart and become unnoticeable when you drink it?

I can't speak for Guinness but I'm sure he puts them in dry. And when you put them in dry they just get ground up. Best bet is to grind them first in the blender or just do them seperate in a coffee grinder or small food processor to make them very fine.

You wont ruin the nutrients of oats, mostly just looking for fiber and quality carbs--not ruined with cooking.
the problem with cooking is usually involved in draining, but if you think about it, what happens in your stomach? the purpose of amylases is to breakdown the carbs. so it doesnt really matter in that respect. actually if you dont cook them long enough you are going to get really bad tummy aches (possible bad gas--yikes!) because the oats expand and absorb water just like rice. so be careful and cook fully!!
fiber is just passed thru your system anyways...
not to go off on a tangent.
but cooking oatmeal with milk is delish--a few ideas for ya!
mix with protein--vanilla-any fruit and then with some splenda and almonds..
or use vanilla protein, and in the spice section of the grocery store check out pumpkin pie spice, get some of that, and mix with splenda,.
or just strawberry protein and almonds, and its like fruit and cream instant oatmeal...
you can use oatmeal to make really good cheat snacks, like
oatmeal raisin cookies, (cant remember off the top of my head the recipe for that right now, but hit me up if you are interested)

oatmeal apple crisp,
spray oats in spray butter,se aside-- cut up 2 apples into slices, lay flat in a pan, spray down in a little more spray butter, add a teeny bit of no fat yogurt, cinnamon and splenda, mix all together, cover top of oatmeals with the cooked oats and then bake in the oven at 350 for about 20 minutes, switch oven to broil and cook uncovered for about 10 minutes longer to crisp the oats!! yum yum.

good luck, hope that helps!

I only eat 'em raw for the time factor. I've never been bothered by stomach aches or gas (but maybe the people around me have :lmao: ).

Yeah I just throw 'em in the blender. It wouldn't hurt to put 'em in the coffee grinder but I've never done it 'cuz for me the blender's fine. I DO put the oats in first so the blades hit 'em right away - not sure how much difference it makes.

You're not gonna have to choke the shake down but it is a little thicker. My blender is a cheapo from walmart and it shreds through everything just fine. I usually have ice in there too for thickness.

i'm talking about cooking the oats and then you mix the protein in and have it all hot! just like instant oatmeal. i cant imagine drinking them uncooked, i think my stomach would bloat like a seagull eating rice.
add the almonds and fruit and little milk or no fat yogurt tomake creamy and sweet after done cooking.

you should try them with the Pumpkin Butter. :p

i just have 1 cup oats in a bowl.....add some water and some sweetener...and 1 protein shake next to it......perfect carb/protein breakfast

1/2 cup quaker oats, 2-3paks of splenda, and sprinkle some cinnamon and youre golden. You canalso do this with brown rice and it is excellent.

Just bought some Pumpkin Pie Spice & Apple Pie Spice today to try in oatmeal.

sounds good! anything unhealthy about them? If not I'll probably run to the store and pick them up. Making something healthy taste good is magical.

Nope - it's just the cinnamon/nutmeg/cloves/etc etc that you'd put in the pie without having to have 15 different bottles lying about. It's a dried mixture in the spice section of your grocery store. Or your local store might have "holiday displays" set up for baking stuff so it may be there....

used to you both of them all the time instead of just cinnamon. maybe i need to go to the store and get some again. That Pumpkin Pie spice is calling my name.

I've been eating my oats in pancake form lately. I got this recipe out of Muscle&Fitness.
8 egg white,
1 whole egg
1 cup dry oats
1/4 cup water
1 tbsp cinnemon
1 tbsp splenda

Mix everything together in the blender for a minute and then poor onto a hot pan and cook it up like a pancake.
