so how much does one need to make to realistically live downtown, for a single person? nothing fancy, but enough to live comfortable.

More my man.......If not you can go to one of the boro's or stay in the city and your place will be tiny and or you'll have a nice place and prolly will go broke. In other words it can be done but it'll be hard.

Then you need to add, food, travel costs, gym membership, clothes, laundry, and the cost of your social and/or sex life.
75k would be very modest and you would have to be very good with your money.
You would be taking home rough 4k, 1900 after rent and minor utilities (no cable no cell phone), $400 a month in food now you're at 1500 or $375 a week spending money.
If you have no debts - you might be able to pull it off.
