most common cause of pain/numbness in the hands and fingers after waking up is carpal tunnel syndrome......especially if its the thumb, index, and middle fingers. It is from sleeping with your wrists in an awkward position. Just like you can "strangle" your blood vessels, you can strangle your nerves and by kinking your wrist thats what is happening. The Median nerve is entrapped.
There is also an Ulnar nerve entrapment, but symptoms are mostly in your pinky and ring fingers. That nerve passes medially to your elbow.
If its a nerve in your shoulder that is being compressed you would have pain/numbness run down your whole arm.
Whenever a nerve is compressed, the symptoms are almost always below the point of entrapment.
