The flag is on top of the instrument panel. It doesn't block the view of the tanker, even though it looks like it

When you are doing air refueling must of your energy is directed at keeping the airplane where it is supposed to be to maintain contact. One of the hardest things to do was to instruct air refueling. You had to talk and refuel at the same time as you showed the new pilot how to do it. Then you had to make sure they didn't kill you when they tried it.
