New work record.

Scotsman

New member
I worked 391 hours last month, all billable to the client. That's 10 standard work weeks in four. If I were still hourly I would have made over $11,000 in October, but since I am on salary it's goin to be just over $6,000. Sometimes it's best not to speculate :worried:

wow that is a SHITLoad of work.. can I ask what you do? (have I asked that before?)

I am a geologist/reservoir engineer for a natural gas estimation company. I work out on drill rigs to collect data for gas in place numbers that are used by companies to figure out if they want to produce a field or not.

your client got a lot of free shit there at your expense. client 1, you 0.

Nope not the client, it's my employer getting the free work. The client gets billed a daily rate for all our services including labor, whereas my employer only pays me a portion of the day rate I am charged out at. Were I payed what I am billed out at I would have made over $20,000 last month.

Damn Scots, you need a better salary and day rate. It does suck to figure out hourly rate when you live on the rig though eh?

Well I didn't go into geology to make money.

AVG starting salary of a geologist <$20,000/yr
2nd year geo ~$30,000

I'm nearing my fourth year as a professions GEO and should make close to 60K this year, so I am way ahead of the salary curve. Geologists have to love what they do because there typically isn't a lot of money in it.

Undoubtedly. I still live a pretty comfortable life so I can't bitch too much, it's always nice to make more though.

And you rig guys always think us Rock Cocks are so well payed ;)
we're on the low end of salary range in the patch.

Derrickhands up here are starting at $26/hr. Working 12/hr days. That is over 10k/month if you worked straight through. Want a job?
I just got off the phone with the Pathfinder Coordinator, he is going to call me back to set up an interview. Still waiting to hear from Directional Plus.
Rock Cocks should get paid more having to live in a shack alone on the rig and analyze data and number crunch.
Wait that is what I do too, Damnit.

Unfortuneately I need to stay in the geology field to help get into grad school at some point. I got offered a $450/day job plus mileage to be a corehand, but didn't take it for the aforementioned reason. Now if my grades had been a bit better in college I wouln't need the work experience, but hindsight is 20/20.

So that is how you got into stronman camps? Throwing kegs around at parties instead of studying.
BTW, I work in geology too. I chew up rocks and spit them out if they get in my way.

Well geologist are know to party a little too much now and then (read every week)

LOL I'll refer to you as an apprentice rock cock from now on then, although think about what that means you'll be munching.

Lion- sorry man I am repaying the shit I already have for now, I should be debt free by spring, and then I need a new car as mine is soon to meet it's demise.

Damn, that's a lot bro. You owe yourself some down time. :)

At least you got something per hour. You surely didn't expect to get 100% of the billing to the client for those hours. What profit does your employer make from your work then?

No chance for downtime for a while, looks like I am headed to Texas as early as this weekend. Maybe someday soon I'll get a vacation but as of now I've had only one day off since Sept 25th.

Razor- I make about 25% of what they bill me out at. And I am on flat salary with a day bonus for pay, I get payed the same if I work 2 or 24 hours a day, but only get the day bonus for days spent on the rigs, I don't get bonuses for travel time, or when I am at the office.

Yep..I feel your pain..start your own business if you're already working those hours! I'm serious!

This one time, at the rig, I dropped off lunch for the company hand and made my day rate.

Then the DD and I went to the bar and got shit hammered.

BTW Scots 54 12's in a row on the rig is my record.
48 days straight living on the rig as DD, with the exception of a nice quiet 12 hour drive from Colorado to N.D. immediately after finishing one job then arriving and rigging up to run tools in the hole on the next. Gamma no less. Yeah

I love days where you make an appearance and get payed for the whole day.

I think the longest stretch I've had of at least 12's is about 35, but I did work 70 of 77 days a couple of years ago, and then there's the joy of me getting stuck on a rig by myself working 24's, my longest single shift to date is 97hrs, and I have regularly worked shifts in the 40hr range without any sleep. Then there was the time I worked 15hrs got 17 off and then worked the next 30.

Aside from the money why the hell do we do this to ourselves?

It's a nice idea, but in order to start a business doing what I am doing now I'd need at least a Million dollars start up capital.

WOOTOOM- I feel your pain man, when I was working in Paradox CO, I worked 310 hrs in 17 days doing and exploratory well.

Just become an outside consultant. My old boss worked for a Fortune 1000 and when they phased out his position he started his business and they hired him back at 3x what he was making.

im tired for you :rose:

Consultants don't make much more in my industry then you have to hold your own taxes, get personal health insurance, and if anyone works with you you have to have workers comp insurance, so most geology consultants come out behind me. As I said before geology is not a high paying profession.

Oak, So far I am only getting 1-3 days between jobs, but looks like it may slow up a bit in december.

Sorry to hear that...my boss was billing himself at $1,000.00 a day and since it was a corporation he had a salary plus profit sharing, 300k a year and the business had no debt in under five years. I was billed at between $60.00 and $120.00 an hour based on the project.
