New to PL & this board

Well, I've been on Elite for sometime now. Used to be under a different alias two years ago, but mainly spend my time on the weight training and diet boards. Never was really intrigued by PLing, but strength is becoming more of an issue for me. I don't plan to compete, though I do wish to fight. Once I start becoming more "financially secure" I plan to learn BJJ, Muay Thai, Arnis and Krav Maga. I've looked up things on a bunch of MMAs and such, and those four just really caught my interest. I also know BJJ and Muay Thai to be some of the most functional arts out there.

So anyway, my reason for delving into strength training more is because of my desire to win in a fight. I know you need force. With that, however, you also need acceleration. So, I'm starting on a Westside Barbell routine (generic as of now, since I have to see how it works for me) in a few days (just got over being sick, need to pick up the pieces now) since I figure the ME/DE days reflect my needs of strength (ME) and speed (DE).

Now, I may be wrong in thinking Westside is the optimal way to go about training to be a fighter. I know plyometrics and actually sparring and practicing the arts will be the best way to improve myself, but in terms of working out in the gym (my house, for me) I think Westside will work quite well.

So, if any of you have any opinions on this, I'd love to hear it, so I know whether or not I'm getting off on the right foot.

You can already see, my name is Tom. I'm 17, 5'11, 185 lbs. or so and probably 12% BF at this point. Never really consistent with diet up until recently (first HST cycle over the Summer or so and I made some pretty solid gains in a short period). Been training for about two years, definitely put on mass, just need to buckle down with diet more often than not to improve now. I'm a mesomorph, through and through. Legs are naturally big and strong, arms are lacking in size and somewhat strength.

Okay. That was long. So. Hello everyone.

hello tom. im not familiar with fighting techniques or how they get stronger/quicker, but i would think DE days would greatly suit you. i would talk to big rick rock also, i believe he is into mma

I would say both ME and DE days would benefit - HOWEVER - unlike most of us - you should also preserve MAXIMAL speed through specific training (Ie fighting simulation) during your strength endavors...

To use as an example - say you are a pretty good sprinter - to delve into DE and ME style workouts WITHOUT continuing to do pure speed work the whole time (ie sprinting and overspeed work) seems like a good way to get real freaking slow and to lose some of the natural speed you have...

Interesting Tom T - you just gave me and idea....

Runners use assisted work to do overspeed work to try to increase their turnover rate etc... Ie - attach a band or some type of spring to them to pull them forward, or run down a hill as they run....

Could one say tie a band to a rack and back up (so that the band would pull your arm forward-you will have to pull arm back in the "relaxed state") and then punch to try to increase punch speed?

Or is this different because you are talking about turnover vs extension speed?

I think I will ask some other people about this....

Go to eliteFTS and click articles. They have an article about WSB and MMA, though it might be oriented more towards the upper level bros who have more time to train.
