New to martial arts

Hi guys,

I've been wanting to get into some sort of martial arts. From what I've seen so far in these threads is that doing some sort of kick boxing with some sort of grappling style is the way to go. You can probably tell I am a complete novice to this sport. What I would like to know is how do you know if your trainer is any good ? Is there like a certificate or some sort of association that the trainer would be a member of ? I live in South Africa so I don't know who to contact or speak to about getting in this kind of training. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Also I have a problematic right knee. I may have to go for ACL surgery in the near future. With this in mind should I even be thinking about doing this sort of training or is it totally out of teh question and I have just wasted everyones time with this long message :o

Thanks

Two years ago I started training in MMA. Muay Thai, BJJ, wrestling, and boxing. Its ALOT of fun and huge stress reliever. Just do some research on your instructor. If its BJJ what belt do they hold? Obviously a black belt is what you are looking for but starting out you can learn a lot from a blue belt. The most important part is that you are comfortable with the instructor. So check out a few schools and see what fits your needs.
As far as the ACL goes...that could be a problem...start off slow and go from there. You can train in MMA and not get injured.

I would suggest you start getting your body in shape while you gat your knee situation taken care of. This will give you a few months to prepare to start training and also time to find a good school / instructor.

Do you have any local MMA fighters or promotions going on? If so attend an event and ask around where the guys train. Most schools will let you take the first class free to try it out. You may also try any local boxing gyms - go in and ask if they know anyone. Most fighters know where their competition trains as well as other competing schools.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will definitely look out for schools in my area and see what they have to offer and also what their instructors have to offer.
