Someone paid to dump that oil. Need the insurance money since they paid way too much for it. 500,000 x $15 = $7,500,000

Oil has dropped huge in the last week for those of you who don't know.

Just a business deal.

MARRERO, La. -- A Louisiana lawmaker charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend over the weekend is also accused of violating the terms of his bond in an ongoing federal money laundering case.

Watch The Story

State Sen. Derrick Shepherd was handcuffed Monday when he appeared before a federal magistrate for his initial appearance on the alleged bond violation. U.S. Magistrate Louis Moore Jr. ordered Shepherd confined to a halfway house, pending a hearing Tuesday afternoon in the federal case.

The Marrero Democrat is awaiting trial on charges that he helped launder money for a woman running an illegal insurance business.

Shepherd was arrested Saturday on charges of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, theft and simple battery.

Deputies said they were called to the home of Thaise Ashford, 29, just before 3 a.m. Saturday.

Ashford claimed that after repeated calls from the senator, he forced his way into her home and an argument ensued where Shepherd allegedly hit her in the stomach. He's also accused of stealing Ashford's cell phone and $100.

Deputies executed a search warrant at Shepherd's home Saturday night and arrested him. Deputies said that after a search of the home, they retrieved a cell phone belonging to Ashford.

When officers arrived at the lawmaker's home, they said, the senator wasn't alone.

"Our officers peered inside of Shepherd's home and they noticed two ladies in a room with Sen. Shepherd, one of which was performing a lap dance in a very provocative way," Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said.

Police said one woman was a community liaison for a local company and the other was a woman from Texas.

He was released on bond at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

He claimed he was only reacting to a threat on his family. Shepherd made a brief statement but did not answer questions after his release from custody.

"Obviously, because of whatever circumstances I've been going through, people have saw it fit to call me names and call me out, and call me out, challenge me, things like that," he said. "That's fine, I can handle that. I have broad shoulders."

Shepherd said he will not tolerate anyone attacking or threatening his family members.

"You do that and you have a problem with me," he said. "There's going to be consequences and repercussions, and that goes for anybody. Thank you. And the only thing, the only thing I'm guilty of is not calling the police first myself."
