New Killzone 2 beta campaign footage (remember that cgi video?)

not overly impressed here. Doesn't look better than far cry on the 360. The textures look kind of bland, like cartoonlike almost. And I think that's where the weakness of the ps3 lies because it's Gpu isn't as good as the 360. The cell processor has impressive physics though..........that was some of the most realistic character animation I've ever seen. I was struck by how well the dude looked who was burning.

If this is a beta version.....it's running on emulation hardware right? basically a super gaming rig emulating the ps3 parameters........right? Sony is well reknowned for making these seem like what their hardware will put out. They've been doing this for years.

It's a semi-open beta. People have been playing the multiplayer portion on their PS3s for about a month now. Now they get to play the campaign.

It's been a pretty common thing to dog the PS3 ever since Sony's cocky debut, but they've increasingly been proving the system's capabilities so it gets kinda old hearing it lol. Overall the PS3 has the 360 beat on graphical capabilities. The first game that suggested this was Uncharted, which was made only a year after it launched. Numerous review sites and gaming forums have voted it the best looking console game.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Review | Ripten Video Game Blog
Gametrailers.com - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - Review HD (fast forward to the last quarter for presentation/graphical comments)

Then you have games like MGS4, most technically impressive console game by far. I haven't even seen a PC game do some of the things it does.
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, most realistic driving sim.
Heavy Rain, already looking to be the most cinematic game while still under development.

The reason for this is the Cell processor has a lot of bandwidth, and can assist the gpu in rendering/texture streaming capabilities. There are youtube videos of it rendering near-PS2 quality graphics at a steady frame rate by itself, so a stronger gpu isn't entirely necessary.

I've played Gears of War a year after the 360 came out and it looks damn good, but the Unreal Engine has limitations. Can't get away from that glassy charcoal-like texture mapping. And considering it and Gears 2 are largely considered the 360's best looking games, I really don't think there's much left to pull out of the system. It's much easier to program for and it hasn't matched the best graphics PS3 has had to offer so far.
Also, while many multiplat games do look better on 360, in some cases it's not entirely true, especially when you have gaming websites that seemingly play favorites-
Digg - Gametrailers admits 360/ps3 comparison videos are innacurate

I can see myself getting another 360 to play Gears 2, but I think the PS3 has a quite a bit longer legs. We haven't even seen what God of War 3 will be like yet.

gears is the best looking 360 game?? I mean it looks good, don't get me wrong........but what I've seen of far cry running on the 360 I would give that the best graphics. I was actually pretty impressed by how good the 360 and ps3 versions of far cry look.

It may be that in another 2 years programmers are getting the most out of the cell and the ps3 really starts to pull away.........but by then the next microsoft and nintendo consoles will be just around the corner. Sony kind of shot themselves by getting the ps3 out so late. I actually think nintendo is going to make a huge splash in the console market for it's next system. The money that company is making must be ridiculous.

I guess they profit like $6 and change from every Wii sold, not bad considering there's like 30 million of them out there. That's $180 million just from hardware sales, which companies like Microsoft and Sony are happy just breaking even on!

I see the next console generation being a bit more staggered, with Sony once again getting their system out last. They're playing catch up both in sales numbers as well as financially and I doubt we'll see any new hardware from them for at least another 3 years, probably E3 2011 they may announce or reveal a PS4 in the works. By that time Microsoft and Nintendo might be ready to launch their next system in the fall. I'm sure the PS3 will still be strong enough at least from a user base standpoint to compete with early Xbox 720 games, kinda like the SNES competed with the Playstation back in the day. In the end it's kind of an advantage for Sony because they will probably have a significant edge in hardware launching a couple years or so after Microsoft and Nintendo.....as long as it's more developer-friendly.

Yeah I still have to try Far Cry 2 for PS3 to see how it is. I was spoiled by the PC version. Disappointed in the ending though. Great gameplay freedom and probably the best game environments of this generation...those were the game's two main strengths. I just picked up The Witcher Enhanced Edition for PC, although they're supposed to have an improved version for consoles next year. This game will keep me busy in my spare time this winter.

You played Dead Space yet? It's supposed to be pretty crazy.

this must be the first time in the history of the industry that a company actually profits off of the hardware.

The thing about the design concepts that microsoft is using, makes their systems real easy to design for. By the time the 720 rolls around, it's probably going to massacre even late stage ps3 games. The one thing going for sony is that I read they will probably keep the cell processor for the next system and go get a great GPU. The cell processor, as a gaming processor, will probably not be touched for some time. Who knows, it'll be interesting to see if microsoft goes for a version of the i7 for their processor. Hopefully they learned that "fake" multi cores run too damn hot if you're not going to liquied cool the system. If the 360 were liquid cooled there probably would not have been one single case of rrod. They were right to put the old xbox in a big case........too many whiny fan boys though so they made the 360 smaller but with more than triple the power.

I haven't, but after I saw the feature length cartoon on scifi the other night.....I might have to try it. I'm not a fan of 3rd person shooters..........how is it?

They all profit....eventually lol. Actually I think Microsoft cut support for the Xbox before it had a chance to. Oh well.

I was surprised to hear you say that about Sony continuing with Cell, because last year they confirmed they were no longer investing in Cell manufacturing or development, handing that off to Toshiba. But after doing some sleuthing apparently they may be forced to financially. This puts them in a tight spot to compete with Microsoft next time around. As long as MS plans out their R&D/Quality like they should have with the 360 rush job, they could be in a killer position to dominate next gen. Sure, Sony could add a bunch more cores to Cell and shrink the die, but it's still the Cell. It reaps great performance rewards and can do many tasks very efficiently, but only if you're willing to put massive time into the extra coding efforts. It'll be interesting to hear how developers will react.

Try the demo. You have a 360 right? I got the impression it's everything Doom 3 should've been, only in 3rd person.

Still waiting on my barley 10 month old xbox 360 to get back from M$ after downloading the MANDATORY update and RRODing my console.

Am still considering once I get it back trading it in for a PS3. I dont know though....I was reading about some of the developers talk about how difficult it it to develop for the PS3....Electronic Arts being one of them.

Electronic Arts as a developer is pretty overrated. The mostly rehash old shit and old ideas, put out lazy ports and stick their big label on the cover. Check any gaming forum and see what EA's rep has been like lately. Dead Space was a pretty big surprise from them, but even then it was a satellite studio that made that one.

Recent PS3 exclusives are the best thing to happen to consoles this gen. Uncharted, MGS4, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, and now Killzone 2 looking to be another AAA title. God of War 3 should pretty much force Microsoft to start developing their next system, because if it's anything like the first two were for the PS2, it will have the Xbox 360 officially outgunned.

PS3 will be around the longest out of the three consoles, and will have by far the highest quality exclusive games with free, lag-free online gaming, as well as competent multiplats. They've already gotten a good start. Microsoft better enjoy their success this gen while they still can. I do think they could have the better system next time though.

Isn't microsoft going to sell a new version of the 360? the jasper chipset??

It may not be such a bad idea. What you want out of the main processor is mainly physics. From what I understand the Cell is a beast at processor duties. In a couple years they'll be able to make that chip dirt cheap and it'll still be on par gaming wise with high end PC rigs. Throw in a high end GPU and who knows....??

I've read that microsoft is "contemplating" an all digital box for their next system. But that means that anyone who buys it HAS to have access to ultra high speed broadband. Not sure that's going to be the case in 3-4 years. We "might" be out of this recession by then.........lol

The thing about Cell is even once people know it like the back of their hand, it's still gonna be hell of labor intensive compared to what Microsoft has. Sony better hope developers won't mind that, or else it's back to the drawing board. Maybe they can make a more efficient dev kit for it.

Yeah I also don't think we're ready for "full digital distribution". Microsoft's pissed they lost the format war, so Blu Ray's the last thing they want to end up with. It's funny to hear the PC sites thrash Blu Ray. Who knows if Sony will even stick with it, since it's still nowhere near the market share of dvd. The thing that sucks about digital distribution though is it can be unreliable, and like you said it will be almost worthless to anyone under 10 mb/s connection speed. I'm sure the bandwidth will have to be even higher to support the sizes of games in the future. Unless they develop better compression techniques. Not to mention HDD's will have to be big enough to support people's entire game libraries. Online storage of titles could be an option, but then people have to deal with the waiting to download them (or perhaps stream them?). The console industry is an interesting beast.

Damn apparently the site got carried away with the videos-

Our public apology to Sony and Guerrilla

2008-12-05 21:22:30 by BlimBlim

Some of you may have noticed that we removed our videos of Killzone 2 from the site.

The reason is that, by showing you most of the levels featured in the preview code, we caused more harm to the publisher Sony and the developer Guerrilla than we could ever have imagined.

We got carried away by our enthusiasm and our desire to share the content of this fantastic preview with you. This is an unforgivable misconduct as professionnals, and as journalists.

Therefore, we have permanently removed all the concerned files. And to the people working at Guerrilla and Sony we'd like to adress our public apologies.

The Gamersyde team.

To our fellow members and readers, we are aware that you were all very pleased by our videos and that you will probably want to find us excuses.

If you really want to support us please do so by avoiding polemics and trying to recognize Sony and Guerrilla’s fundamental right to protect their intellectual properties.

Thank you all in advance.

They had over 12 of them on there so I suppose lol.

"Sony better hope developers won't mind that"

See thats the problem though....if you are a developer what would you rather do....work with an easy to develop for console and focus on making the game great or struggle with a "Very exotic and difficult to program machine" and spend more time trying to figure out how to even make the game?

Sure, the 360's got some great games, but expect PS3 exclusives to continue raising the bar.

I am in he killzone beta, and let me tell you the graphics are amazing not bland at all. All these videos dont even come close to what it looks like on a high end tv. I have a 360 and killzone 2 graphic wise blows far cry out of the water. The ai in killzone is amazing. I thought it would be hard to to msg4 but with killzone 2 they did that and beyond. They have still had 40 percent of the ps3 left, which means games can still get better. Its going to be the game of the year. The game is way better then gears of war 2 i have it and the ai and graphic on killzone 2 kill it without a doubt.

I just sold my 60 gig PS3 for $600 this weekend. :( But I can always get a newer one with the 65nm Cell chip when KZ2 is released, and cheaper too. Plus I still have all my game saves stored on my PC. Double :)

Is the beta you're in mp and campaign? Notice any bugs or glitches, slowdown etc?
I ask because even though people have a great impression of the beta who knows what the final word will be. Hopefully it delivers on all the things the first game didn't.

I have not noticed any bugs or slow downs. I am a huge gamer and killzone 2 is just insane all the hype surrounding it are totally true. Gears of war 2 is a great game but it has nothing on killzone2. The graphics and detail on killzone 2 is just crazy. The ai is so sick. The destruble envorment is awesome. I have pre ordered this game. The 360 could not run this game even if it tried the cell can only handle it. There are so many things needing to be processed that only the cell can do it. The 360 would brik hard trying to run this game.

You sound like a PS3 fanboy lol. All the previews I've read though have good things to say about it, as well as people who've played the beta. I'd love if this game came to PC but highly unlikely. I'll get another PS3 someday, planning on the more efficient one.
