I have no idea what to do about this.

Most of y'all know that I have been thinking about moving to NY to pursue acting....had a trip up that way a couple of weeks ago and it cemented my decision to do so.

THe past several weeks I have been applying to Chemist positions in the city....I have been turned down on all of them....most were b/c I am "overqualified".....a couple were b/c "You are not local"...even though I made it clear I would relocate. I have the feeling that the "perfect - ie chemist job in the city will possibly not happen for a while and most likely will not happen until I am local.

Most of the tv series that film in NY generally cast sometime in March or so.....so I NEED to be there by then at the latest.

I am getting by working a pt job and at the gym and collecting a touch of unemployment. I have applied for jobs here and in Atlanta as well, thinking that I would take one until something in NY opens up.

I was ofered a chance to be the lead in stage production that will be in Athens which affords me a great deal of exposure as the Atlanta paper will probably be there. The show runs thru Feb.

So the timing is ok as I would be wrapped up by when I need to be in NY.

The problem:

I think it is wise to assume that I will NOT have the type job I will need WHEN I get to NY as I will be paying out the wazoo for rent and will need to furnish it from scratch. Working as I am doing, and especially if I land a lab job here, I can save enough dough by March to get the apt furnished and cover 3-4 months of bills.

If it were you....would you leave to go there in March with just the money in your pocket and no secured job...working two jobs if needed?

I would leave and move just outside NY city (Jersey). Rent will be much much cheaper and at the same time you can make your way into the city everyday looking for a job in your field.

Good advice.

...interesting as I just applied for a job in North brunswick

outside NYC rent is much lower. try long island or north jersey.

If you truly are overqualified (that isn't an excuse to not make you feel bad on the part of employers) can't you pad down your resume? why not feign incompetence just to bring yourself down a notch. I can show you how to stare blankly into space for minutes on end & answer questions no one has asked. You will be hired in no time.

LOL

the problem is that I am considered an expert in the area of Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry......folks are hiring a basic Chemist I-III, I am considered a IV-V...and thry do not want to pay the extra money...I told them that the money for a III would be fine and they said that I was over qualified meaning I would be bored and leave them if a IV, V opened up elsewhere...

Supernav - Hard thing to think about though...BUT you do what you gotta do I guess....

New Jersey...Dear God man you are desperate.

LOLOL

well...that is where the job is........

:lamo:

I need to look up a former EF member from up around NYC and crash at he and his hottie wifes place....

I hope everything works out for you.

I'd love to see you hit it big. That way I can blackmail you with that slasher chick video some day. LOL!!!
